Favourite authors/writers

Jhumpa Lahiri is my favourite. I like everything but my favourite of the novels is The Lowland and my favourite short story collection is Unaccustomed Earth.

I love Colm Tóibín. Favourite is The Blackwater Lightship, and then Story of the Night and The Magician.

Jennifer Johnston, with The Illusionist and How Many Miles to Babylon.

And I love all three Khaled Hosseini books, but particularly The Kite Runner.

In terms of pure writing STYLE, I love Robert Westall, Frances Hardinge & Tanith Lee. All very different writers in different genres but they have a skill with words, descriptions, sentences that stand out as so uniquely chosen & well written, it's something I don't think can really be taught. I love everything I've read by them.

Best books/stories from each include:

Westall - The Machine Gunners, The Wind's Eye, Yaxley's Cat. He also wrote countless great ghost short stories too.

Lee - Red As Blood, Three Days (short story)

Hardinge - A Face Like Glass, Cuckoo Song
 
I was lucky enough to meet my favourite author Dan Jones, he of medieval history fame. He was very attractive, but there were definite hints of pretentious.

I am met Elodie Harper at the same time. She was nice.

I really liked The Secret History, but I found the follow-up such a chore I never read anything else by her since.

Iris Murdoch is someone I mean to read more of. I've only read The Black Prince several years ago but I remember it being really good.

The Sluts by Dennis Cooper is the only book I've ever read that made me physically sick!

Also if you're a fan of the likes of Hollywood Wives & Rivals, have you ever read the UTTERLY BONKERS My Sweet Audrina by VC Andrews?

Yessss :disco: I read that and the Flowers in the Attic series far too young. Had nightmares about the legless woman in the little trolley being FLUNG down the stairs.

The ghostwriter wrote a sequel a few years back that was absolutely AWFUL.

Vera from My Sweet Audrina is an ICON. If she's not trying to shag everyone in sight or being a spiteful twat, she's breaking bones left & right due to brittle bone disorder :disco: I was rooting for her ALL THE WAY.
 
Tempted to resurrect the Moopy Book Club for My Sweet Audrina as it’s absolutely the type of UNHINGED stuff that would go down a treat here.
 
Sounds bonkers. Plus the thrilling topic of diabetes has been dangled.

Topics like rape, brittle bone disease, PTSD, and diabetes are woven into the narrative.
