I was thinking recently how the download/streaming era has pretty much killed off the double 'A' side format. You can see from this list of number 1 double 'A' sides that they were at their biggest during the '90s and early 2000s.

Are there any in particular that stand out for people?

Who Do You Think Your Are/Mama was PRETTY BIG for me. And Heartbeat/Tragedy will forever be associated with each other in my head.

I guess they were a way of hedging your bets with the next single, or showing different sides of an album, while only having to do one round of promo

I never knew some of those were double A-Side, like Pump up the volume or Please don't go.

Obviously it's all about RIVERS OF BABYLON/BROWN GIRL IN THE RING :disco:

M|A|R|R|S and KWS weren't REALLY double A sides in the way you ever heard the OTHER side. I know the former was some kind of CONTRACTUAL DEAL because of the collaborative nature of M|A|R|R|S. I have no idea about KWS

Sorry to be all Mojo on y'all but the best Double A Side isn't on the list: "Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane" by The Beatles.

Blur's first single "She's So High" was a double a-side with "I Know". The group came to hate the latter so quickly that it was buried, being ditched from the album and not reappearing until the box set and reissues programme of 2012.

The tremendous irony of "Pump Up The Volume"'s huge success is that the collaboration was deemed a total artistic failure by both bands. PUTV became a proper hit due to the remix that added about 90% of the samples but it was still at No. 1 when Colourbox said there would be no follow-up, much to the annoyance of, well, everyone else.

I'll always have a soft spot for Thunderbirds/3am :shy:
