Maybe it's our own gentle slide into middle age, but bland old Gabz seems to get a lot of goodwill around these parts of late.

Which of her surprisingly many hits still do it for you?

Even I have succumbed to Gabrielle in recent years. It's clearly age.

I have done a full 180 on Dreams. Back in the day I heard bland nothing. Now I think 'what a lovely treat'.
 
Shine was a great comeback.

Should I Stay defies artist, genre and music. That life support machine beep us genius.
 
I honestly can't for the life of me work out who has heard Fallen Angel and put it on repeat. Maybe it was on some soundtrack that I'm unaware of. It's pretty massive on Spotify still.

Going through that list I really like a lot of her songs, and I think they are quite timeless. My personal favourite is "Forget About The World". It used to be "Should I Stay" but I find it quite hard to listen to as it's almost too much of an open-wound song, if that makes sense.
 
Forget About The World is THAT girl. No one knew her in the 90s but she was the tits.
 
She was a teeny bit iconic in the 90s for seeming to be over every couple of singles only to come back with a banger. I remember being gagged with Rise was announced as the #1 on CD:UK.
 
I feel we should really issue a formal apology to @cwej for collectively thinking she was Baroness Basic for the last twenty years for having Gabs as her diva of choice. History has shown that there was no choice but to st... etc.
 
She's released some right bland old toot in her time - I can only think of Don't Need The Sun To Shine as a musical representation of the banality of evil after its feature in Nighty Night - but when she gets it right she REALLY gets it right.
 
I can leave the (to my ears) bland tat like Sun To Shine, Out Of Reach and Sunshine, but her slightly DARKER stuff like Should I Stay, Forget About The World, Going Nowhere and Give Me A Little More Time show an element of depth beyond the radio hits.

I'm sure she's had a few songs in the same sort of vein since the first greatest hits too - I just haven't bothered to listen :D
 
Rise also remains a SPLENDID shock number one. It shouldn't work relying on the sample so heavily, but the lyrics really sell the song and make it its own BEING.
 
I adore Sunshine from the more bland side of her catalogue. It resonates, cheesy as it is, and is probably my favourite overall melody of hers.

But I'm with the people stanning Forget About The World, Should I Stay and Give Me A Little More Time. Literally, wurst basically stated my top 4 of her singles there I think.
 
I’ve always loved her, since the days of Dreams and Going Nowhere being staples of long wave radio Atlantic 252.

Give Me A Little More Time is divine. I was disappointed when Forget About The World missed the top 20. Not as familiar with her post-2004 material but Every Little Teardrop and Show Me are enjoyable.

Rise really did feel like a shock #1, even after Sunshine making the top 10.

Well ESPECIALLY because Sunshine only made Number 9. It's rare for the second single from an album to be the one that blows up in that way - it certainly was back then anyway.

Very true. I do miss that about that era, anyone could get a #1 with a great song.
 
The Rise album was a complete flop before the title track came out too. Went in at #25 and was down to #83 by week 3.

Incidentally it was released the same week as Melanie C’s Northern Star, which followed pretty much the exact same trajectory :david:
 
After falling down a Gabrielle wormhole last night, I was reminded of her star turn in Perfect Day. Sorry Heather Small, but Ms Gab should have had the high part, the most singing part.
 
Give me Give Me A Little More Time anytime. It projects a dramatic 60s aura that had her on the road to divadome. It's just a shame she stopped off at ASDA with the likes of When A Woman instead of pursuing more pop velvet such as this. It's so proud it makes me wish she'd changed her recent Tina cover to Proud Gabs.

I never knew until THIS TOPIC that Dreams originally had a (very) slight Fast Car sample and a HINT of a club beat



Launching her career with the EYEPATCH schtick was a BIT OF A GAG lets be real!
 
I'm not really old enough to remember it, but surely this must have been QUITE A MEMORABLE MOMENT as the United Kingdom got their first glimpse of the DREAMS GIRL for the first time

Difference is the rest are all on their first (big) albums there. Normally for returning artists there's a lot of fanfare about their first song back - Gabrielle really didn't get that for Sunshine. I think the fact that went top 10 was a surprise in itself.

Yes I met her at the album launch party for Play To Win. I won tickets from her website, when I imagine about 10 people applied to go. :D When we were there I was really hoping to meet her and her whole band came out to the bar pretty much except for her. My mum mentioned to the musical director that I was a big fan and he went to get her and we were brought backstage to meet her. People in her team kept coming to interrupt, probably thinking we were annoying her, but she kept telling them to go away because she was busy talking to us, which was very lovely. (My mum went on to insanely drunk and I took her to the original Kubar where she got chatted up by some quite aggressive lesbians. :D)

Anyway, Gabrielle is incredible with her fans. I read a post earlier on Facebook that made me smile:

Not many artists would do that.
 
I just gave Play To Win a spin, mainly to hear the apparent lost hit Fallen Angel (which is lovely) but there is some good stuff throughout. Gabs gets a country tinge here and there and Picking Up The Pieces is especially gorgeous.
 
The songwriting is strong on Gabrielle's hits. The production can be so beige, though. Are the "Rise Undeground" tracks all out there in unsegued versions?
 
The underrated 90s trio of Because Of You / If You Really Cared / Going Nowhere is why I keep coming back to Gabs. And Dreams, obviously. Some of her stuff is a bit too Radio 2 for me.

My favourite ever track though is a soul ballad from the Rise album called Over You. It’s her best ever vocal.



I don’t know why but it slaps. That whole album is really good, i just hate the title track.
