Favourite horror films? (1 Viewer)

For me it always goes back to the campy '80s slashers.

Oh there are far too many to list.

Off the top of my head my favourites would probably have to be Doomsday, 28 Days Later, House of 1000 Corpses, Event Horizon and The Hills Have Eyes (2006 version). I also love George A Romero zombie films and loads of John Carpenter stuff (writer or director). Death Proof, Planet Terror, Hostel and From Dusk Till Dawn are a few Quentin Tarantino faves. Also the Saw movies up to number 3, I gave up on them during Saw 4.

The only horror films I refuse to watch are things like Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity films where you don't actually see much and a lot is left to the imagination, they terrify me because my imagination conjures up worse horrors than are being implied. I actually cried during Blair Witch and had to put the big light on in the living room.

Friday the 13th Part 2 is my favourite in the Friday series! Ginny is a great final girl, I just wish there was a version with the uncensored kills out there.
In terms of rewatchability my favourite horror films are probably the Scream series, neo-slashers like Urban Legend and I Know What You Did... as well as the original Halloween or the Final Destination films. I also love Rosemary's Baby, Peter Jackson's Braindead, The Silence of the Lambs, The Haunting (63) and Candyman. I never tire of them.
I have a soft spot for films about the supernatural, ghosts and cults. A good ghost story can still scare me.

Absolute favourite is 80's campy Italian slasher 'Stage Fright' - go check it if you havent seen it! (Its also called 'Deliria' or 'Aquarius' or 'Bloody Bird')

The Others

Is that the Nicole Kidman children's film? I love it but wouldn't consider it a horror. I've spent many a happy hour watching it and trying to see Nicole or one of the children breathing (other than the part when the kid's breathing on purpose to annoy the mum).

This is one of my favourite genres and I love everything from disturbing psycho dramas to campy 80s slashers. Some of my recent favourites:

- Fright Night (1986 original) - creepy, funny, lovely practical FX that still stand up
- It Follows - this is such a creepy idea, I love it
- Vamp – Grace Jones runs a ridiculous strip club full of lady vampires because why not
- Suspiria (the original and the remake - BATSHIT)
- Society - seriously GROSS
- Reanimator - seriously GROSS and FUNNY

The list could go on and on.

Ive definitely seen 2, possibly seen 3, but not 4 for sure. The synopsis for 3 doesnt sound familiar, but I might seek it out now Ive read up about it

The second one did nothing for me, so didn't bother with the third.

Oh yes. It's special in that it's the only slasher I can think to describe as artsy. The final bit with the killer arranging his mis-en-scène, the feathers floating like snow followed by the key suspense is so well done. I also enjoyed Cemetery Man by the same director as an out of the box zombie film.

I was just about to post something about ‘Possession’ but a quick search reveals that Sister Bleak and esteemed co-hostess of the MADAME LOUNGE got there first



Frankly I’m a bit nervous about watching it (having bought the DVD about a month ago) and I’ve merrily sat through the fire extinguisher business in ‘Irreversible’ ET AL (mainly with an eye out for Gaspar Noé having a wank it has to be said). Were you EVER the same after watching it, @jivafox?

I’ve just finished watching ‘Possession’

Where do you even BEGIN? The U-Bahn fun was (almost) the LEAST of the horror! That awful writhing SNAKE THING! The BLOOD HEADS! The bits and bobs in the freezer! The electric knife and mincer! The Doppelgänger malarkey! I’ve not felt this disorientated and loosely psychotic since I finished reading Roland Topor’s ‘The Tenant’! (Compared to which the Polanski film pales into total insignificance)

I watched In Fabric last weekend and it was bonkers, dark funny horror.

Midsommar and Heriditary were both my jam.

Climax is classified as horror but it’s more of a thriller.

You’re Next remains my favorite home invasion movie.

Don’t Look Now and Rosemary’s Baby if we’re talking classics. All four Scream movies for slashers.

Can't believe I've still not seen Possession (1981). The director Andrzej Żuławski (1940-2016) was one of the last true auteurs. On the Silver Globe (released 1988) is such a marvel, but not quite horror. Diabeł (1972) seems like a tame taster of the absurdity promised, but the flair for the fantastical is evident in excess, like a twisted Fellini.
