Inspired by OUR LU'S many appearances on the recent re-runs of the 1998 episodes of TOTP.

Sadly, despite being one of the radio BEHEMOTHS of that year, with every hit getting huge amounts of airplay & some very decent sized hits, she was never to trouble the charts again after hit number 4.

My preference is for "Ain't That Just The Way", which hits a sweet spot of commercial, slightly dance influenced radio friendly pop.

Despite that unforgivable middle eight, it’s still Stranded.

She was bizarrely still landing top ten hits in Sweden as late as 2006.

I'm not massively fond of any of them, or her voice particularly. But I'll go for Ain't That Just The Way.

See for me “Ain’t That Just A Way” was a great slice of 90s R&B, albeit a bit late as it sounded like smooth R&B and by that point the sound had moved on to the Darkchild/Timbaland sound.

“Stranded” was such a swerve, way more poppy. But a total earworm that gave her a massive radio hit.

Not that we weren’t all trained to expect a certain look from our soul ladies in the 90s, but I was more than a little surprised when I saw her on TOTP and she didn’t exactly look like Toni Braxton or Brandy…

I love Stranded. It just checks all the right boxes.

Lutricia McNeal vs Gabrielle though?

I remember Stranded being rinsed to death on CAPITAL. I did have a soft spot for her given I thought she'd be a one hit wonder. She then did fall off the face of the planet.

I also remember my Dad being convinced she was ONE OF ETERNAL GONE SOLO despite me informing him otherwise.

Lutricia McNeal covering Abba?

How was this not an EXCEPTIONALLY FAMOUS CULTURAL ZEITGEIST MOMENT?

Why is the video concept two girls BATTERING each other in a Soviet Union car park whilst Lutricia jubilantly yells about discos?

My Side of Town being a random NZ #1 always makes me smile. Whether it was because sales were so low, or possibly it was in relation to when airplay was mixed into the charts in 1999, it always struck me as an odd one to make it, albeit we had plenty of random r&b number ones throughout the 90s.

It’s 13-1-19 chart run though doesn’t fill me with much confidence. Seems LEGIT :D

Did they even release it in the UK?

Sorry but I have a soft spot for The Greatest Love You'll Never Know.

I remember at the time telling my dad I had to buy the single. When he asked why, I said because it's her last chance and I want good things for her. He said that was a good reason and we bought it.

I mean it didn't help her one iota but it does make me sound very magnanimous.

They should bring back REBORN IN THE USA and Lutricia should be a contestant!

I just found the HD video upload of Someone and sure, it wasn't really grabbing me, but this is proving quite decent tonight:

Well, it was the HD upload of the single My Side of Town, which I'd never heard befofe. Why upload and then not allow it to be viewed off of YouTube?
