DJ Robin Williams (essentially playing himself) entertains the troops in 'Nam but falls foul of the bigwigs. This didn't age well in many ways, the jokes ain't funny & most of them are either racist or homophobic.

2 girls are left in the care of evil governess Stephanie Beacham. Based on Joan Aiken's classic kids book, I watched it as a kid after reading the book. It's nowhere near as good as the book, missing lots of details including Aiken's sharp satirical eye, & the mansion doesn't look like I imagined it, but it's still a top entertaining kids flick that sadly flopped & appears to have been forgotten, perhaps in part due to the dark subject matter not seeming fitting for its audience nowadays in the UNITED WOKEDOM. BRING BACK CHILD LABOUR.

Upstart Tom Cruise is taught the ways of the bar business by old hand Bryan Brown. This is dismissed these days as glossy, shallow 80s trash - including, I think, by Tom himself - but I really like it precisely BECAUSE of that - everything from the soundtrack to the fashions to the images of New York is absolutely of its time. It's the sort of film that could only have existed in the late 80s. Plus I do like the puntastic tagline of 'when he pours, he reigns'.

Baseball groupie Susan Sarandon takes up with rookie Tim Robbins much to seasoned pro Kevin Costner's CHAGRIN. I'd probably need to be a PROUD AMERICAN to get all the baseball stuff but this is a superior romantic comedy from a cast with effortless chemistry. The only real complaint is there's only one brief post match gratuitous shower scene. DO BETTER, PEOPLE.

Bicentennial Man (1999)
Robin Williams is a household robot who strives to become recognised as human. I think this was criticised for being mawkish when it was released, but although it had its HOKEY elements, this was poignant & thought provoking for the first 90 minutes. The make-up is incredible & with the rise of AI, the story looked to have aged very well, not to mention the sadness of him remaining the same as those around him aged & died. Then the last bit turned into some super f'd up love story that undid all this good work by being creepy & incestuous. Way to drop the ball, guys.

Children Of A Lesser God (1986)
William Hurt starts teaching at a school for the deaf & falls for feisty school helper & former student Marlee Matlin - still the youngest winner of the Best Actress Oscar. It's a film with good intentions, but the saviour narrative is very dated now. Thankfully Matlin's character fights back against Hurt, who decides early on that she MUST be helped - perhaps she's OK as is babes!
It's also hampered by how to deal with the sign language aspect. The better decision would have been to use subtitles, but clearly there was concern about the long silences this would entail. So instead we have Hurt repeating back everything Matlin is communicating to him, with the inadvertent outcome of this making his character appear a condescending ass. Rather telling that Matlin couldn't sustain a Hollywood career despite the Oscar win too.

A crew show up to a farmhouse in Bumfuck Nowhere to make a porno, only to find the old couple there aren't exactly the most HINGED of people. Good, full of fine detail, some decent scares but it was all a little too slow paced. The prequel, Pearl, was better, but this was enough for me to check out the third film in the franchise soon.

Incredible opening shot - immediately pulls you in. an unsettling but enjoyable domestic "thriller" until quite a shocking act of violence turns it on its head. excellent stuff. the French really do know their cinema.

I loved the Care Bears as a tot & refuse to let my time at the teddy shop view them as a cynical exercise in marketing. The bears help a few kids through some mild peril & everyone learns to be loving & kind & I want to live in Care-A-Lot rather than whatever nightmare this twatting planet is in 2026. AGOG that Carole King did the theme tune too.

Kim Basinger is CONNIVING TROLLOP Holli Would, who wants to leave the animated 'Cool World' for the real one while detective Brad Pitt tries to stop her & her ruthless ambition becoming MURDEROUS. Brilliant animation that's full of ideas & like a cross between Ren & Stimpy & Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but all this creativity is hampered by poor execution, with a nonsensical plot & terrible wooden acting from Basinger & Pitt. It clearly wanted to be the adult Roger Rabbit, instead it killed off the whole mini genre of live action/animation hybrids. A shame.

Melanie Griffith tries to get ahead in the workplace while working for ruthless Sigourney Weaver. The shoulder pads! The ancient computers! The towering perms! The casual sexual harassment & everyone in the workplace being a two-faced backstabbing twat - oh wait, those bits have not aged at all
Mel is a bit charisma free in the lead but it's entertaining enough, although it's less a romantic comedy for me, more a set of triggering experiences of workplace politics BS that haunts every place of work in every generation.

Pedro Almodóvar's directorial debut, made on a micro-budget, is more just a series of scenes that set out to be as shocking & provocative as possible, from a literal dick measuring contest to a woman pissing in another woman's face during a knitting lesson to a crude parody of a rape. I can't even imagine how this must have seemed to Spanish audiences at the time, but there's little hint of the auteur Pedro would become, although it still succeeds in being grotesque & shocking in turns.

Based on the real life mystery of who shot film producer Thomas Ince on board a yacht carrying some huge Hollywood names (including Charlie Chaplin) in November 1924. Nobody on board ever revealed what happened, but this is a decent reconstruction of how things likely went down. I love this era of old Hollywood & this gave me the dose of glamour & intrigue I wanted, playing out like an extended Poirot special - Kirsten Dunst as Marion Davies was particularly impressive.
