Hideous Kinky (1998)

It's been long forgotten that Kate Winslet followed up Titanic with this little indie film about a feckless hippy mum in 1970s Morocco. A slight although visually stunning work, but shows that Kate was always willing to try something interesting & different from the blockbuster route she might have been expected to take after Titanic.
 
Pearl (2022)

I haven't seen the slasher film X that this is a prequel to & went in blind other than knowing that Mia Goth's performance was talked about as one of the best of the year (she was indeed terrifyingly brilliant). Basically what would happen if Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz had delusions of grandeur before going feral & murderous, this is horror set in dayglo colours & sunshine. Its unhinged lunacy is probably an acquired taste, but I thought it was JUST SWELL.
 
Double Indemnity (1944)

One of the classic film noirs, with Barbara Stanwyck as the ultimate femme fatale plotting her husband's murder via an insurance scam. Billy Wilder was a genius, writing & directing one timeless classic after another for decades. There's nothing further to add about this film that hasn't already been said before - it's a must watch for anyone with a love for cinema.

It's a great role for her.

Maybe worth me reconsidering.

For me, this is an A picture and that's not what film noirs were. Like punk, it was a movement and not actually a genre that was capitalised on.
 
A Private Function (1984)

Wartime comedy about an illegally registered pig being stolen during rationing. Written by Alan Bennett & with an all-star cast including Michael Palin, Maggie Smith & Liz Smith, who won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in this role years before The Royle Family. All this quality involved though, & I found it boring & unfunny. Not one that's been mentioned much in terms of anyone involved's careers since the initial critical praise & I can see why. Disappointing.

This is one of my favorite films of all time
 
I think a rewatch of Double Indemnity is due. it's been a serious hot minute since my film noir phase but I recall that it was a ten. Babs was a top dollar femme fatale.

my other fave was gorgeous sultry Gene Tierney in Leave Her to Heaven.

Possessor (2020)

I saw the uncut version. Provocative in a ghastly struggle that has you rooting for a child-killing assassin as the real victim. The face-melting scenes eventually give way to a clear as day mask that is utterly disquieting and a brilliant homage to classic horror imagery - I feel something many great horrors do is play with intertexuality and a familiarity/expectation of the text. Stripped of special effects, this basic mask somehow had the most chilling effect (I loved taking this scene in). It was genuinely mind-bending in places. An open ended exploration of something dystopian and hellish.

I give it a B+

The Northman (2022)

Nicole Kidman should have been the entire focus. If it had leaned into the folklore fantasical more I could have enjoyed this a lot. It just... dragged. We've seen this many times so why bother doing it again and just cut to what this is truly offering? Nicole has a ridiculous introduction and I thought this was going to be a ham-o-rama spectacular. When she hisses her hatred at poor what's his face it belatedly gets going some. The blow up doll love interest is a terrible actress and should never be cast in anything ever again. Even Bjork was underused. Why not give her a number for all she actually did?

I give it a cold clasp on to a C.
 
Annihilation (2018)

Portman is once again great, conveying intelligence even when disorientated and under a scrutiny that she herself needs when reunited with her partner. I like the film letting you decide for yourself, some of the happenings seemed rather impractical (a massive crocodile failing to keep a hold of them under the water in a swamp), but it's a stylish brainteaser with some elements of horror. Not your typical blockbuster sci-fi, nor does it ever aspire to be.

I give it a B.
 
I finally got around to watching MEGAN 2.0 this weekend and it was as shit and fun as I expected. I really hope they don’t got for a third because there’s not much they can do story wise BUT I’m sure they will find a way.

Weekend At Bernie's (1989)

Yes, a film that involves a dead guy getting hit in the crotch a bunch of times is lowest common denominator humour, but it was also funny & I refuse to be judged by Moopy OR SOCIETY :agnes:
 
Cloud Atlas (2012)

It pulled its strings together eventually. I know it would be missing the entire point, but I think it would have worked having them all be separate installments, with my favourite being the cyberpunk strain of the story, closely followed by the care home escape. Tom Hanks was awful when not playing Tom Hanks (the cauliflower-eared Irish man being just remarkable). And some of it shot in both Glasgow and Edinburgh - Hollywood just can't stay away from the former.

I give it a B.

I did quite enjoy the adaptation of this. Maybe not everything worked, but I'd always thought the book was unfilmable & it was a decent stab at bringing it to life.
 
Letter To Brezhnev (1985)

Scouse girls Alexandra Pigg & Margi Clarke meet 2 Russian sailors on a night out in Liverpool & one thing leads to another. Margi's effortlessly comic turn made her the bigger star, but Alexandra (who appears not to have acted since 1994) does hold her own in the less showy part of the girl dreaming of a better life. Yes this is funny, but it also serves as an important document of a bygone era, especially from the images of my home city long before regeneration.

this made me want to visit beautiful clean Glasgow
 
Inception (2010)

I really like Marion Cottilard and Elliot Page in this, but I can't say I loved it much beyond what they manage to do here and the general premise. Leo just doesn't do it for me, JGL is misscast (which reminds me that I still haven't seen Brick (2005)), Cillian Murphy I find overrated as a pouting prop, and Tom Hardy perhaps underused. It's a great concept and it withstands my personal gripes. I'm basically looking up sci-fi films at the moment, so had to get this out the way at some point.

I give it a B.
