Together (2025)
I had high hopes for this, but I didn't find it that funny and it definitely wasn't grotesque enough. Not creepy or suspenseful either.
 
Now I've seen some Sirk melodramas I thought I'd watch Far From Heaven (2002) again

It's good, it's beautiful but somehow it just doesn't scale THOSE heights of DRAMA
 
The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)

Since I don't really inhabit the Marvel stratosphere, I thankfully didn't have any expectations beyond wanting a retro-futuristic kitsch aesthetic. I thought it was pretty decent if utterly unspectacular where I felt it ought to be (silver surfer lady should have been jaw dropping for one). I'm guessing the series will remain dormant for a while.

I give it a C.
 
To Sleep As To Dream (1986)

I love this kind of thing. A silent movie era actress hires people to find her missing daughter. Presenting the clues via stylish and surreal throwbacks to both film noir and silent pictures all the while presenting cinema and its recognisable trickery as a dream in itself. Cannot wait to see what else the director has done.

I give it an A.
 
Tom At The Farm (2013)

I'll be honest I mostly watched this because they kept going on about Xavier Dolan in The Summer With Carmen :D It was good enough but like with Matthias And Maxime I wouldn't rave about it
 
I know I’ve seen ‘Tom…’ but reading the synopsis isn’t ringing many bells. I know I enjoyed ‘Heartbeats’.
 
Yes, Heartbeats, I Killed My Mother and Mommy are his strongest imo.
 
Good Boy (2025) aka Heel

A 19-year-old criminal named Tommy is kidnapped and forced into rehabilitation at the hands of a married couple.

Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough and Anson Boon star. A solid 7/10.

Just watched Charlie XCXs The Moment.

I imagine if you're a big fan its even better but I quite enjoyed it. It deffos got better as it went on and got a bit more absurd and while it wasn't exactly subtle in the way it highlighted everything wrong with the music and entertainment industry it was worth it for the ending.

Killing Patient Zero (2020)

Prime documentary focussed on the early years of the AIDS epidemic & the demonisation of flight attendant Gaétan Dugas, blamed for many years as the 'Patient Zero' of AIDS & vilified as a callous super spreader of the disease from coast to coast.

Absolutely compelling & required viewing if at times infuriating & upsetting, covering everything from the dismissal of AIDS by the Reagan administration to the panic & confusion of the sudden appearance of 'gay cancer' to painting a fully rounded picture of a man scapegoated as a monster by many from his own community to right wing homophobes when he was no longer around to defend himself. I'd heard of Patient Zero before, but I didn't know anything about him as a person. Easy to forget there's always an individual behind the statistics, code names & scare stories.
 
Queer (2024)

Daniel Craig gets obsessed with a younger man in 1950s Mexico. Daniel is good & commits in full to the role, & I'd really loved Challengers, the other film from Luca Guadagnino from this time. I struggled to keep my attention on this one though. Just couldn't engage with the characters enough.
 
Working Girl (1988]

Can finally tick this one off the list! Obviously dated now (as is the New York skyline :( ). Sigourney and Joan shine. I didn’t buy Melanie Griffith as leading lady material.

Give me Big Business any day.

This is on iPlayer at the moment. Went quite weird at the end bit it was OK.

Much preferred Femme, which is also on there - highly recommend!

I'm quite sad that I've now seen all of the peak Sirk melodramas but WHAT A MOVIE

Although I still think Magnificent Obsession is my favourite because of the COMPLETELY BATSHIT PLOT

Anyway as a girl who has CONSISTENTLY MARRIED BENEATH HERSELF I can relate to this one :D
 
Love & Friendship (2016)

The film version of Jane Austen's 'Lady Susan' starring Kate Beckinsale. Not quite as devilish and delicious as I was expecting.
 
A Summer's Tale (1996)

My mother was always a fan of ERIC ROHMER and I can see why. Oh to be young again and get into pickles like GASPARD (and heaven knows I did)

Bonus point for BRITTANY pointedly REFUSING to be SUNNY
 
The Forever Purge (2021)

Interesting premise, with chilling parallels to ICE, but they waste no time cutting to the chase and for fans of the genre only I'd say.

Scouse girls Alexandra Pigg & Margi Clarke meet 2 Russian sailors on a night out in Liverpool & one thing leads to another. Margi's effortlessly comic turn made her the bigger star, but Alexandra (who appears not to have acted since 1994) does hold her own in the less showy part of the girl dreaming of a better life. Yes this is funny, but it also serves as an important document of a bygone era, especially from the images of my home city long before regeneration.

Hugh Jackman takes matters into his own hands when his daughter is kidnapped. Bleak & harrowing at points, twisty & turny, kept me drawn in throughout. Good performances from all the cast with Hugh really impressive with his range. An Oscar is surely on the way with the right role.

La Vie En Rose (2007)

Never got round to watching this back then but it was 2.5 hours well spent on a fascinating icon with all the successes, hardships & addictions that defined Edith Piaf's life.

Oscars got the Best Actress award right that year when Marion Cotillard won, her performance is tinged with genius, she's practically unrecognisable, with the voice, mannerisms, everything spot on.

I think my 2 favourite BOPS from OUR EDITH are probably Milord & The Poor People of Paris aside from the obvious one :disco:
 
Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Tom Hanks chases youthful conman Leonardo DiCaprio around the globe. Another old film I'd never got round to watching, this is fine & entertaining Spielberg fare, not to mention further proof that the ability to talk bollocks rather than actually know what you're doing will get you everywhere in most workplaces.
 
Mother! (2017)

Creepy fans of Jennifer Lawrence's husband Javier Bardem invade their home amongst other things. A headfuck in the first half, batshit in the second. I feel like it's all a metaphor for writer's block or something but it felt like a filmed nervous breakdown more than anything.

The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989)

Jeff & Beau Bridges hire nightclub singer Michelle Pfieffer to add a bit of pizazz to their stale lounge club piano act. This is the closest OUR MICHELLE has gotten to an Oscar, losing to Jessica Tandy for Driving Miss Daisy. While that film hasn't aged that well, though, TFBB is still just great, with that bit of 80s magic that certain films of that era have. And there's a reason why Mich slinking over a piano in a red dress to sing Making Whoopee has become a go to image of pure cinematic SEX APPEAL.
