I was wanting to watch The Fabulous Baker Boys the other day, but sadly it wasn't on my dodgy fire stick. Seen it years ago though. It has ambience.
 
The Miracle Worker (1962)

*insert tasteless Helen Keller joke here*

There's as much discussion nowadays around Joan Crawford accepting Anne Bancroft's Best Actress Oscar for this to get one over on Bette Davis than there is around this adaptation of the often told tale of Annie Sullivan teaching Helen Keller how to communicate. Anne is fine, although the fiddly-dee accent gets a bit MUCH, but the old school, OTT acting style of some of the supporting cast, in particular the parents, hasn't aged at all well.
 
Julie & Julia (2009)

Julia Child & husband move to France in the 1950s & she begins to collect the recipes for her later cookbooks & TV show. Meanwhile in 2002 aspiring blogger/writer Julie Powell sets herself the challenge of making all 500 plus recipes from Child's French cooking book within 365 days. Meryl Streep added another flawless transformation (& an Oscar nomination) to her repertoire as Child, but the stakes are so low for Powell in the modern day that it creates a film of 2 halves, one undeniably weaker than the other. Entertaining if slight, although I found the music consistently annoying throughout.

another great, naturalistic film by Mia Hansen Løve, if quite sad. gorgeously shot on film. more and more I think all films need to go back to shooting on film. recommended for Francophiles and fans of Paris on screen
 
Hadn't bothered ever looking at Film4 HD, but they have Fantastic Voyage (1966) on next, so I'll give it a bash. Only really seen Raquel Welch in Myra Breckinridge (1970) alongside Mae West (and a fun cameo from cult icon goddess Genevieve Waite), plus cameos herself later in her career on shows like Sabrina and of course promoting her wigs.
 
Love them saying the film is indebted to the many scientists and doctors they consulted as if what we're about to watch isn't complete trash :disco:

Edit: actually, the reviews are good. I just assumed this was some Welch in a bikini b-picture.
 
Fantastic Voyage (1966).

Definitely what douching whilst on hallucinogetics might be like. And a bit like douching when it doesn't go according to plan and lasts far longer than you had envisioned.

I give it a C.

Was Tony Curtis wearing wigs even then? Charles Laughton really was such a ham, and even looked like one.

The Blonde One (2019)

I do love a Marco Berger film. They're all the same and LONG and NOTHING MUCH HAPPENS but IT DOESN'T MATTER. The SEXUAL TENSION in this one though! Been there done THAT :bruised:

I did enjoy that one. Still not watched ‘The astronaut lovers’.
 
That was the first one I saw ... it was good but this one was better. I think I'll watch PERRO PERRO next which looks, um, BARKING
 
To Die For (1995)

Local TV weather girl Nicole Kidman's ruthless ambition escalates to murder. Still probably my favourite Nicole performance, she would surely have gotten an Oscar nomination in most years outside the stacked 1995. Just great.
 
The Cabin In The Woods (2011)

Chris Hemsworth & friends encounter supernatural horrors in the woods in meta horror comedy that never really made me jump, but did keep me locked in. Bonus points for a surprise Sigourney Weaver cameo & TIL this is the film that this GIF came from:

The Monster Squad (1987)

A bunch of kids have to take on Dracula, the mummy, werewolf man, etc. That same could only have been made in the 80s feel as The Lost Boys & Fright Night but more for kids, if only I'd properly watched this at 8. Still a fun (& with some funny dialogue, penned by Shane Black) watch, it'd be good at Halloween if you haven't seen it & it's still on Prime, but I ended up really wishing I'd seen it back then for the first time rather than now.
 
Mama (2013)

2 kids are abandoned in the woods to be brought up by some creepy ass supernatural entity that doesn't take kindly to not getting VISITATION RIGHTS when the girls are rescued. Another GOAT acting performance from an unrecognisable Jessica Chastain as a rock chick type who slowly develops a maternal instinct, once again showcasing why she's one of the greatest actresses of her generation. I didn't jump though - maybe I've gotten desensitised to horror films.
 
Practical Magic (1998)

Nicole Kidman & Sandra Bullock as 2 witch sisters dealing with a family love curse. Hadn't seen it back then, part of a golden age of witchcraft related entertainment such as Charmed/The Craft/Sabrina etc, but gave it a watch with the sequel due. Has everything I should love on paper - a fabulous cast, magical shenanigans, etc - but while it was alright, it felt a little flat & undercooked. Sadly only OK.
 
Dolls (1987)

Porcelain dolls & puppets scare the BEJESUS out of me & this could easily have been pretty scary despite a budget of about 12p. It's full on B movie schlock though with the hammiest acting you'll see, fun & bemusing in a way, give the basic premise to someone to remake though & you could have full on nightmare fuel.
 
I loved Dolls. Got it in an 80s themed Blu-Ray set I'm still going through. What a treat. Shame no sequel as was planned.
 
I think I have probably said this before, but I discovered Dolls when I was looking for more films that in any way could be similar to a fantastic Spanish horror film called Crystal Eyes (2017) about a mannequin serial killer seeking revenge for the death of a supermodel who was electrocuted and burned alive on a catwalk (whilst drunk and having spat champagne on the audience of course). A 5 stars sorb review FYI.

Subtitles of course, but I promise you don't even need them.

 
Time Bandits (1981)

A kid goes on the run through time & space with some dwarves who've stolen a map from God. Not seen it since I was about 13, this Terry Gilliam comic fantasy is still one of the most visually stunning & atmospheric films I've ever seen. Scenes like the glass barrier in the desert & the cages swinging over the abyss still hold up so well. Lots of satirical stuff I didn't pick up on back then too. This should be considered an all time classic yet nobody seems to remember it now. A shame as it's every bit as entertaining as it was when I was a kid. Underrated & genuinely great.

The Eyes Of Tammy Faye (2021)

Jessica Chastain got her long deserved Oscar for this portrayal of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. This dayglo biopic is just like the woman herself - camp as tits but endearing with it. She's shown here as being wilfully oblivious to her husband's embezzlements, you do wonder how much she actually knew. Full props to Jessica for her performance - with the voice, the 555770 horrid hairstyles & makeup & the slightly manic personality, this could easily have tipped into being cartoonish, but she feels real from start to end. Very good all over.
 
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)

Jessica Tandy regales timid housewife Kathy Bates with reminiscences of the old days in a small Southern town, even covering off such LEFTY WOKE NONSENSE as lesbians & equal rights for black people. My mum properly loved this film. Despite dark subject matters of premature death, prejudice & murder, it's a nice, gentle, feelgood watch.
 
Creep (2014)

Watched this as some of my colleagues at the shop love it & also think I look like the main actor. Don't see that myself, but this mainly handheld camera shot film about a videographer dealing with a man whose initial request to make a short film gets increasingly UNHINGED, is a masterful effort which shows that a micro budget can still deliver shocks with the right timing & props. A ride!
 
I saw that at the cinema. My friend used to torment me with that noise it makes. Not seen the sequel yet though.
