funky does Kylie: "DISCO" (2020)

01 Sex-er-cise - yeah I don't like this. It sounds like something one of those S Club solo stars would do. Or like a song given to someone like Holly Valance in 2014 with a ridulcous amount of money spent on marketing and a video with an expectation of a massive comeback and it totally flopping because someone forgot to actually bring a SONG.
Thank SIA for this. I have a love hate relationship with this song.

07 Feels So Good - OK I quite like this. The choices here are all clicking. It's lighter on the synths and you can hear more interesting layers of production because of it. The vocal is really nice too. It's airy and breathy without being too empty. There's a nice build up to the chorus as well, giving it a bit of a euphoric feel. It's very dreamy and spacey. Definitely the best song so far.

I was wondering if Sexercize might be an insane funky curveball where you somehow LOVED it :D This is one where you HAVE TO give the video a watch by the way, it's absolutely insane that it happened and so un-Kylie

08 If Only - oh this is good. The chorus is typically loud and busy like most everything else she's done since 2010, but the obvious 80s inclinations on this set it apart and take it right up a level. It's not just the switch to 80s synths rather than 10s synths that work, it's also because the melody borrows very heavily from 80s power pop - I can hear Pat Benatar, The Bangles, The Go-Gos and even early Madonna in the vocal here. I'm coming back to this one. See I don't mind a busy chorus when the rest of the song is doing something interesting! I hate those early 10s songs that are just one hard beat and dirty synths from start to finish that make your ears bleed. This is not that. This is GOOD.

I honestly would have been devastated if you didn't like this one, it's my favourite on the album!

Of course you would like it. It's an Ariel Rechtshaid production. BEST SONG ON THE ALBUM.

Tom Aspaul wrote and originally recorded this one! My favourite of the album up to this point too

Why is Sparks not on Youtube or Spotify??!! Has it been removed?? It's a BEAUTY!

Les Sex...

:horny:

05 Les Sex - this feels like a step back after a wonderful mid-album run, but like much of the rest of the album, it's not that it's bad, it's just kind of there. There's too much going on, it's almost like I can't find the song for all the layers of electro trickery over the top of it. This probably sounded much more at home in 2014 to be fair. It's just noise to me now!

I always forget how much I enjoy the title track, even if it makes me think of the album cover and how oddly DEAD she looks in the photo :shy:

06 Kiss Me Once - does she keep her run of strong title tracks going? Not particularly, but there's a decent song here. I feel like a broken record but why the reliance on big loud synths in the chorus? It just drowns out whatever song existed! The verses are actually quite nice. I quite like the bells in the chorus actually, this sounds like a Hurts song. A bit Erasure too. There's definitely something fun and anthemic here. I would have selfishly made different production choices. An 80s version of this would be delicious actually.

I think all the Sia songs on this record (she was executive producer) share this problem.

I was not aware of a Kylie Minogue / Enrique duet ever existing :D I properly BLOCKED this album out didn't I? I pretty much ignored Kylie for a whole DECADE.

I remember Kylie came to the closing ceremony of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and did an extended set featuring probably a few too many songs from this album, with Beautiful as the lighters-in-the-air moment. The next day all my co-workers were talking how Kylie outstayed her welcome :(

Can someone please find Sparks somewhere online. It seems to have been removed from existence! :o

The problem is mostly that Enrique's voice is musical cardboard. Yeah we all like a good Enrique generic dance bop now and again, but he should NEVER EVER do ballads. Ever wondered what it's like to talk and sing at the same time? Listen to Enrique's ballads.

Also you should have prefaced this album reaction with SKIRT. I can't believe NO ONE EVEN MENTIONED it! It's a MAX track and don't you believe it!

05 Fine - I keep switching between thinking this is good and rubbish, I'm not sure why. It's got some fun housey bits in it which are relatable content, but then it all feels a bit 'let's throw out something that sounds like a dance song in 2014 because people will listen to it regardless' type of thing. They're probably NOT WRONG though.

You posted it as a post-Aphrodite essential before, but it should definitely be enjoyed as many times as possible! And then my Skirt. Came. DOWN :disco:

So the story goes that Kylie recorded THREE different albums for what was to become her 12th album before she brought SIA on board to sort the chaff from the wheat and put her own spin on what became Kiss Me Once. Skirt was from the one of the iterations:
