I know they recorded a duet years later but didn't they refuse to write for her again for a long time after this? :D
 
Back to the Kylie Minogue album, surprised to have heard for the first time today the Rapino Brothers produced original/demo of Automatic Love before it was later rerecorded with Brothers In Rhythm:



The bones of the song are very much there, she may even have delivered a stronger vocal performance.
 
Did anyone else on Moopy receive a demo/sample tape from the deConstruction mailing list at the time? I did. And I think I taped over some of it! I can't imagine what that would be worth now.
 
Where is the Feeling is very Incognito (Always There) to me. The single edit does very little for me in comparison, but the whole thing as a whole arguably distorts Kylie into an all new comfort zone.

What makes this album so rich to me are Kylie's vocals, which have never sounded so resplendent and luscious. No more so than on the Rain-esque pomp of Put Yourself In My Place and the claustrophobic, phantasmagoric eroticism of Confide In Me. The Kylie mysticism of it all.

Automatic Love, Where Has the Love Gone, Falling and the KM People klassic Time Will Pass You By are my main stays of the non-singles. When it's good it's just so atmospheric. Surrender and If I Was Your Lover put work in too.
 
I pop on Surrender on the first sunny cold day of every Autumn as it reminds me of my first weeks with the album. It's utterly SUBLIME.
 
Before @funky reacts to the next album, I wanted to mention that I have been playing the original version of Where Is The Feeling a lot and forgot how much I loved it at the time and was so disappointed when they released a re-recorded mix as the single (albeit one which I probably prefer now too). But the album version is such a joy. I love the way her voice crackles in the drawn out ending. :disco:

06 Too Far - well this is not what I was expecting. I like that it's a different direction, but it's a bit all over the place. Is it alternative, is it pop, is it dance, is it ambient, does it MATTER? I don't mind songs that pull from different places as long as it's done well, and her voice actually sounds fine on this sound. But it's all a bit busy and urgent. I dont mind what she's going for, but I'm left with a feeling of never needing to hear it again.
 
06 Cowboy Style - OK I get the album already. She's been listening to a lot of Britpop and psychedelic rock. This is like the Kylie version of Kula Shaker (their debut came out the year before). I mean it's different and it's fine but it's not very Kylie. I'm all for shapeshifting pop stars and maybe I'm just not used to hearing this version of Kylie but I'm finding it jarring. I have to remind myself that there's a good 3-4 year gap from the last album which is a long time in Kylie evolution years but I'm still getting whiplash from this versus the last album. We're no longer in natural progression territory, this is full tilt head first into a different musical galaxy.

I think this is actually the point of the song. Somehow I am like that sometimes when my head is all over the place and all kinds of thoughts swirl in my mind.

I'm happy with the 6 you've given it anyway :)
 
06 Some Kind Of Bliss - so I recognise this song title and it sounds vaguely familiar, so I've guessed it was a single, and wiki tells me it was actually the lead single, and was a relative flop, missing the Top 20 in both UK and Australia, which I'm sure did the album no favours. This is more anthemic than the last 2 songs so I can definitely see why it was a single, but I'm not getting much from it to be honest. That said my expectations were high after the last album and we're still in the 90s so I was hoping for more. It's all nice enough. The strings and guitar mix are very Britpop.
 
06 Did It Again - I definitely know this. Second single, and performed better. All of these songs remind me of other 90s rock pop songs. Production on this one is actually very good. The way she sings is really reminding me of someone too, but I can't think who it is... it'll come to me...
 
I’m not a fan of this album. Whereas KM felt like a grab-bag in a good way, this really feels like Kylie’s reach exceeding her grasp. Trying to be Garbage, The Manic Street Preachers, Bjork etc and just landing on vaguely embarassing.

Oh, Did It Again is a MORTIFYING attempt to re-write Stupid Girl.

For me her most cringeworthy single until Giving You Up.

This album is essential for her growth as an artist. I doubt she could have moved on without it and she certainly appeared to pick up a few artistic qualities that she used throughout her career.

On the flip side she was absolutely apeing the indie stars of the day. By the time she hit Fever she was leading POP MUSIC.
 
10 Breathe - BY GOD I love this song. I have always loved this song. Between her early pop years and her comeback imperial early noughties era, Kylie was a largely blank commodity - always about and in the tabloids and releasing music but dismissed by the mainstream. This song is the absolute anomoly and sticks its head way above the jumbled 90s career haze. I have to assume this is a fan favourite because even though it wasn't a massive success either singles wise, there is something undeniably special about it. Yes it's another 90s pastiche, this time channeling Bjork and her contemporaries, but when it's done this well, it really doesn't matter. Just a perfect pop song.

10 Breathe (radio edit) - the same song just sped up right? I can take either. It works in both capacities. It's too good.
 
Breathe is beyond sensational (strictly album version only), and I have quite a deep love for Cowboy Style (cemented by the incredible Showgirl Homecoming version). Too Far and Did It Again are bangers also. but the album as a whole really isn't very good is it?

the second half is drab as HELL!
 
as far the artwork - it's iconic, and somehow suits the chaos contained within. if only anyone was putting in that much effort THESE DAYS!
 
07 Say Hey - oh I don't know this, and oh I quite like this. I feel like I'm listening to two different mini albums so far - the only connection between the indie pop of the first 4 songs and the indie dance of the last 2 is that they're all very mid 90s sounding. This feels like a bit of an extended interlude but it doesn't detract from it. This sort of melodic, ambient dance music laid the foundations for trance which ended up overtaking house for a few years from around 2000. The production tropes of this bring back many memories.
