funky does Kylie: "DISCO" (2020) (1 Viewer)

07 Drunk - I quite like this too, but for all the same reasons. I've heard this stuff a million times before but it's nice enough. Oh as I'm listening this song takes a bit of a turn when she starts singing I'm Not Happy and the piano kicks in.... nice. Just reading the backstory about the many delays to the album, but it's just occurred to me that it was released almost the exact same time as Madonna's Ray Of Light. Talk about overshadowed, but there are similar creative directions at play here. Madonna's album is far less scizophrenic and altogether executed better, but that all being said, this middle section of electronic music is pretty good so far, largely thanks to the majesty of Breathe obviously.
 
03 I Don't Need Anyone - oh, back to the indie pop. This isn't as good as the tracks at the start. It's busy and frenetic for the wrong reasons. Maybe it just shouldn't have been preceded by those electronic tracks. Not enjoying the track ordering to be honest. It seemed to flow OK, Breathe being a great seque from the guitar to the dance tracks, but now it's just jumping about. This is very forgettable.
 
08 Jump - oh this is gorgeous. I've never ever heard this before. So far the ambient and dance tracks on this album are the basis for a great album, still with an evolved sound, building off artists like Bjork and Massive Attack and Moby, but in Kylie style. I think she needn't have explored the indie stuff, but maybe that's just me. Really enjoying the moody trippy atmosphere here, definitely saving this.
 
07 Limbo - this is more like an indie/dance crossover, and I'm actually enjoying it. This reminds me of Madonna's "Skin" and Alanis's "I Was Hoping", although it cannot be a copy of either - this track came before both. I'm not sure I'd ever come back to this but I have to give it credit for being well executed and she sounds great on it even though it's a bold shift.
 
spot on ratings. it's pretty here and there for me too, this album, it succeeds most when it's not trying too hard (i.e. breathe, jump, say hey) but as already said it was yet another important stepping stone for her.
 
08 Through The Years - I'm liking this as well. Was it @Jark who said the second half was a slog? I'm actually really getting into this now! I like her vocal style on this, I like the unusual jazz lounge production over the industrial beats - we're definitely going for some Portishead-pop here. It works. This is great!
 
Oh and I much prefer I Don't Need Anyone to Some Kind Of Bliss. The Manics tracks should probably have been on another album though.
 
07 Dreams - this is very much an album closer and not much more than that. But I like it. It fits into the context of the album. It's a bit of a Confide In Me sequel, even though it's nowhere near as good, it's still solid.
 
Two b-sides from this era are outstanding.

Love Takes Over Me and Take Me With You (which is a complete vibe).
 
Well I'm not sure whether to be pleasantly surprised or disappointed... after the early 90s dance pop joy of the last 3 albums it had to end sometime; that being said, I was not expecting to be exposed to an album of Kylie Does A Load Of 90s Indie And Dance Artists I Really Like. Where she called upon Garbage, Kula Shaker and the Manics, I was left a little cold. Where she called upon Bjork, Massive Attack, Portishead and Moby, I was far more invested. There was a great album in there. As it happens, it was a mixed bag of fine to great, but crucially there was nothing diabolical on there.

On the whole I can very much take or leave IP. The writing is very much Saturn Return/Quarter Life Crisis/Difficult time in your late 20s but the derivative sounds are perhaps a bit too calculated.

Whereas Kylie Minogue sounded like a natural progression much of this record feels forced and contrived.

I wonder if she found the fact that Madge landed Ray of Light so successfully after this galling.
 
I'm a BIT NERVOUS about the next album :D It's like doing Rhythm Of Love, such a sanctified album that you daren't mess with, but whereas I knew I was going to embrace the Rhythm Of Love era, I really DON'T CARE for many of the singles from her "imperial era". I just hope the album tracks offer me something or I'm in trouble...

You're going to hate Light Years save perhaps for Butterfly which should maybe have been on Fever and in some territories actually was.
 
In all honesty let's face it the funkster needs to work his way through the next two albums to get to Body Language where more 9s and 10s will be unleashed...

IP just goes over my head, totally not my thing at all. But I absolutely respect its place in her catalogue. Breathe can’t even save it for me as I prefer the single version, as I much prefer it sped up.
 
@funky will clearly love Body Language the most and who can blame him?

I like all the ones funky hates including "I Don't Need Anyone" :disco: , "Some Kind of Bliss", and "Drunk". "Dreams is an all time favorite too. Agreed that "Breathe" towers over all of them regardless. I don't care for "Through the Years", "Limbo", or "Jump" AT ALL. Didn't realize it was such a divisive album on here.

this is what I'm expecting. But Body Language and X are two albums that I'm actually relatively familiar with and I know some of the album tracks. I think because we were in peak Dot/Moopy era by then and I was paying more attention to her releases. It goes downhill again after that though in terms of my knowledge...

It's the most bonkers Kylie has EVER been and it is largely recognised as a successful outing.

I do, although not overly familiar with his work. I THINK he's collaborated with people I'm more in tune with music wise.
