funky does Kylie: "DISCO" (2020)

I do love how that initial video storyline of her head being turned by different men gets completely dropped after about 45 seconds :D
 
For 3 albums running nothing has troubled my Top 20 but it's obviously much harder to do so now. I wonder if anything from DISCO will? :eyes:

You really should react to The Abbey Road Sessions too for the sake of completion and if you want more VOX from Kylie.
 
Kind of horrified to read this and realise I have no recollection of some of the song titles at all.

Without listening to rectify that, in my list of favourite Kylie albums I'd imagine it would be somewhere near the top of the bottom third. I do think it is one of her more important albums though, whatever a Kylie fan's opinion of it. It felt like something of a reset for her with the wider public.

I think the intro and then verses on this are gorgeous sonically and lyrically, probably my favourite moments on the album though the chorus is a bit like chucking the kitchen sink in.
 
Also I like the album because it’s the most she’s told us about herself since Impossible Princess which personally I prefer to her ruminating on things like where the dj goes when the club closes.

I think the songs are largely stellar. The production choices let them down somewhat.

Same :D

As I was reading Funky's review, I couldn't remember how lots of the middle to late ones go. And I've played the album quite a bit!

I really don't like it much and it would be bottom of the Kylie pile for me. I didn't even putting it on reading this thread.
 
I think maybe I’d have enjoyed it more with the context of the album’s personal direction and what was going on at the time?

All being said I was never going to like the production on this. It sounds cheap. Like provincial gay club cheap. We’ve got pussycat dolls and the Saturdays* for that, I expect more from Kylie

Given that you still haven't bothered doing The Abbey Road Sessions, what difference would it have made?
 
While I do agree that Golden would have benefited from stronger production (and some judicious editing), I do think it’s such an important moment for her career. After over a decade of generally aimless trend-chasing, she was flirting dangerously close to irrelevance outside her hardcore fanbase. Another scattershot dud like KMO may well have finished her off.

I don’t think Disco does what it does for her without Golden (and that Glastonbury set) laying the groundwork.

There is a bit of trend chasing on Golden but the earnestness of it covers ups its faults in that respect.

Golden is such a great song. it should have been the second single, maybe the lead. her title tracks always pop off.
 
GOLDEN TOP 5

=01 Shelby '68 - A KYLIE CLASSIC. it feels like she brought country into her pop wheelhouse in such an organic way and the melodies are just so dreamy.
=01 Music's Too Sad Without You - a total outlier here but this smoky, cinematic ballad is simply everything. easily one of her best vocals post-2004. it's giving '90s Kylie. her backing vocals on Jack's verse... amazing. love the way that musically this is both deeply melancholy and very lightweight, like a springtime breeze.
=03 Golden - as mentioned, a banger.
=03 Love - such a clean production, I can hardly believe it's Sky Adams. a gorgeous song that in another world might've had a push.
05 Radio On - beautiful

love is having nothing to hide
takin' a walk on the wild side
love is a disco ball
shining on us all :disco:

special mention to Rollin' - a clear sister song to Dancing but considerably less compressed and more enjoyable. I agree with miss funks that some of the country pastiche songs are too cheap and EDM-y to achieve their objective. A Lifetime to Repair is absolutely unlistenable and I'll never voluntarily choose to hear Dancing again.
 
I think I appreciate the sentiment of Dancing, what it symbolises in her career and the fact that it has caught on as a fan favourite though I'd probably agree that Rollin' is better produced.
 
So I tried to listen to Abbey Road Sessions and it... wasn't for me. So I can't be arsed to do a full rundown, it's difficult to rate the songs on their own merit.

The ones I liked were

"Come Into My World" - a really nice piano arrangement that actually turns it into a different song with a whole new outlook. She sounds wonderful on it too. I prefer it to the original.

"Finer Feelings" - the structure of this song lent itself to an orchestral breakdown so it worked.

"Slow" - again because it has been reconstructed into something else and it's great and she mixes up the vocal to suit the production. Very nice.

"I Should Be So Lucky" - I really like the arrangement here, and because I rather DISLIKE the original it was nice to hear it as something else, mature, adding complexity to a very simple lyric. Nice.


I was mostly disappointed in Confide In Me... it wasn't bad but there was a chance to use the orchestra and do something OTT and bombastic, bond-style, and it was just a bit... flat.

I haven't listened to Abbey Road for aaages but I agree with your highlights. Those and On a Night Like a This I think I remember liking the new version of.

Also agreed re: Confide in Me. The original is already such a layered piece of classical music and the AR version just strips it back to nothing. Definitely one of the more pointless covers.
 
Disco is better than Golden and arguably her best album since Aphrodite yeah yeah yeah
