The song not the album.

I still think this is a gorgeous single. I can see why some people find her quite MOR and boring, and frankly I can't think of a single song from the early 00s that has aged quite so cringingly badly as 'When A Woman', but this one really does stand up.

It's totally my go to song when I'm feeling BRUISED but DIGNIFIED

Oh God VoR

I am having a total Gabs moment right now

If I had longer hair I would fold it over my eye as I WEEP to Should I Stay :disco:

And yes, Rise is fabulous

I remember being shocked the day it went to #1, and then when it stayed there for another week. Did it have a lot of radio support prior to release?

Even though Sunshine went top 5, it did feel like a massive and somewhat unexpected comeback for her.

I only own her greatest hits and Play To Win, which I bought on a whim and never listen to. For some reason I imagine her albums to be quite dreary.

I thought Sunshine was only a minor Top 10 hit? And the album fell very quickly after release, didn't it?

I remember 'Rise' being played on and on. I was baffled by Gabrielle's success with a both the single and the album going to No.1, as I had never heard of her prior to 'Rise', but it's a glorious song and a well deserved No.1 single.

Her second album is quite good. I don't own any of the others. She did become horribly MOR after the Rise campaign, though.

Oh actually yeah Sunshine got to #9. For some reason I had it in my head that it went in at #4.

Going Nowhere is quite underrated I feel. It's so feelgood.

The eyepatch really was RIDICULOUS, wasn't it? :D

I remember thinking she must have some horrible empty socket under there or something.

"What's under Gabrielle's eyepatch/hair?" was always a favourite playground rumour of mine back in primary school. :D

Rise is by far the best Gabrielle single. I've never had the urge to listen to an album as I imagine they're dreary. Rise does emotion very well, I've always loved it.

I only vaguely remember Rise from its original release, but I'm quite partial to a few Gabrielle songs, this is easily the best though.

I remember thinking she must have some horrible empty socket under there or something.

You mean she doesn't???

i only have her GH but every once in a while i give it a spin, Should i Stay and Out of Reach are probably my favorites.

Oh how disappointing, i always thought she was some tortured soul because she was missing an eye.

It's GASH

Probably her worst single

Which probably explains why it went to number one

I think this is where she just became fuck awful on the whole. I see the appeal but it was like every song since has been one wet blanket after another because of its success, "Should I Stay" aside which technically is in the same bracket but just has that gorgeous painful edge to it.

As for the eye, it was quite the disappointment when it turned out it was just a bit WONKY and not hideously grotesque underneath

I'm sorry but Give Me A Little More Time remains UTTERLY BRILLIANT

I hope our funks doesn't DENY this post-Motown WONDER

no I like that one

but it's no GOING NOWHERE

no THAT is a tune :disco:

I find Rise to be one of her weakest singles... I never understood how it crossed over so well - Sunshine was a much better single... though obviously the masses disagree!

TOP FIVE GABRIELLE

1. Should I Stay
2. Forget About the World
3. Give Me A Little More Time
4. Every Little Teardrop
5. Rise

Similar to mine APART from Rise... Only counting singles:

1. Should I Stay
2. Forget About The World
3. Going Nowhere
4. Give Me A Little More Time
5. Ten Years Time

it crossed over because all the braindeads heard it once on the radio and thought OOH I RECOGNISE THAT

it's a clever sample... but that's all it is.

01 Give Me A Little More Time
02 Dreams
03 Sunshine
04 Rise
05 Should I Stay?

Should I Stay is the only Gabrielle I deemed worthy enough of buying. Oddly a relative flop (considering some of the success she's had - FUCK OFF When A Woman).

When A Woman was the WORST SINGLE RELEASED in the ENTIRE YEAR 2000

what's the other old track I love by GABS? Hmmm... to iTUNES FUNKY

oh

Because of You
If You Really Cared
Going Nowhere

those three singles always remind me that she really was QUITE GOOD for a time there

I love Rise, mainly because of the completely :disco: Matt Darey remix.

Top 5 Gabrielle:

1. Give Me A Little More Time
2. Should I Stay
3. Sunshine
4. Rise
5. Dreams

I still think "Over You" is her best ever track. But it was never a single.

1. Over You
2. Going Nowhere
3. If You Really Cared
4. Because Of You
5. Dreams

Quite lovely, but I've always been annoyed by how shoddily the sample has been looped, you can somehow hear it 'click' everytime it starts over.

And yes, "Should I Stay" is her crowning moment, followed closely by "Give Me a Little More Time". I've always had a soft spot too for MoR-tastic lead-balloon-single "Stay the Same", still her last foray in the Top 20 (and indeed Top 40).

I love 'Stay The Same' too. She sounds like she's smoked 40 fags just before recording it. Croak-tastic.
