DO you think of Garbage in 2020? :eyes:

I've had periods of being mildly obsessed with Garbage and then going completely off them but I think I'm in a good place with them right now. The last couple of album passed me by a bit (outside of Empty and Automatic Systematic Habit) but I'll always have time for them - new record more or less done, with a more pop vibe and coming early 2021 according to Shirl.

They're quite up/down in quality terms outside of singles so their GH was a real essential for me.

Oh interesting I've been having a semi-Garbage DAY today.

Version 2.0 is their own album I truly love, but Strange Little Birds and Garbage aren't far behind. They've had great tracks from every part of their discography.

As I mentioned in another thread, more recently No Horses and Even Though Our Love Is Doomed are two of the best tracks from their whole discography - with The Chemicals and Empty also pretty great.

With a few exceptions, I tend to only care about their more tender reflective moments, than their all-out rock moments TBH. Similar sort of story with Skunk Anansie.

Most of their big singles - Queer, Stupid Girl, Push It I appreciate but could happily NEVER HEAR AGAIN!
 
I did enjoy Manson addressing her very own version 2.0 of Gags Vs Madge posting about how goddess Toni Halliday destroyed her with a glance one time backstage at the Guilded Balloon or something, but Garbage haven't featured much for me lately. I love their galvanised grunge on the debut and s&m robo pop sophomore, but album 3 was just ugly: Androgynous was basically the snail trail of Holly Vallance and as far as I could tell Parade was pretty good too. Bleed Like Me was a bit more like it (Run Baby Run turning out to be an absolute keeper for me). After that I have it all to catch up with. I often found Shirley's style a bit unconvincing (the combat pants, the Annie-Elvis do, etc), but when she got it right she was shit the cornflakes untouchable. Push It absolutely maxed out everything.
 
I don’t like them as much as I feel I should when I think of my record collection. They have definitely enough very good songs to have to count with both hands. For me the compilation Absolute Garbage is really all anyone needs.

I like Shirley as a person a lot or at least how she seems to be publicly but Garbage aren’t as good as the bands they reference so much in their music. Shirley clearly was listening to a lot of Siouxsie, Pretenders, Blondie, Hole and Nirvana. Yes I know Butch Vig produced Nevermind. I’d definitely go to a gig of theirs though. A 7/10 band for me (closer to a 6 than an 8).
 
I love them but it really went downhill after BeautifulGarbage. I tried to get into Strange Little Birds (a supposed return to form) and played it tonnes of times but I couldn't hum any of it now.

That being said, seeing them at Brixton on the Version 2.0 20th anniversary tour was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

A little bit like Blondie. I'm alwaus very excited by a new album but it's always hit followed by miss followed by hit. Which means their next one will be a bit! (Not your kind of people - Hit! Strange little birds - Miss!)

They always at least SLAP with their lead singles and they have lots of absolutely brilliant songs on their repertoire to paint a good picture. There's a bit of shite there too, but at least it doesn't outweigh.

I will think of a little top 10 soon. Need to do my Texas one first.
 
in many ways i can't help drawing career projectionary patterns with Garbage and Texas :D and yet such different acts in every sense
 
I love Garbage. They're one of my favourite bands, Shirley is a great singer, writer and personality, and they were great when I saw them live.

I feel like I'll probably never be into anything they put out as much as I love the stuff of theirs I listened to when I was a teenager though.
 
Not usually my type of thing but I oddly really enjoyed them for a while. The first three singles from Version 2.0 remain a masterclass of a run for me.
 
I very much have to be in the mood for them these days, but their imperial stuff is inarguable and I've found plenty to enjoy in their later albums too.

Special is very much that.
 
They had good timing. Noisy and indie enough for people fed up with Britpop when they arrived and then having such a strong frontwoman when people were griping about Spice Girls being anodyne for "Version 2.0" (I recall several "Shirley Manson is REAL Girl Power" type articles, despite the fact that she was auditioned by a highly regarded production team to front their new project but hey....). Once they started to struggle for direction, they could neither be the in-thing or the antidote to the in-thing. The music press struggled to write about them and they struggled for an audience.

The singles from the first two albums are uniformly excellent. Elsewhere, well...YMMV and all that.
 
Oh wow. There was a Garbage/Blondie tour a few years ago but it was NA only. I'm very very tempted!

Coincidentally I also listened to beautifulgarbage yesterday. It really dives off a cliff after the first few songs I find. Their albums are very up and down. They're always at their best when they leave it a few years between them, so I have high hopes for the new one!

Her appearance was more shocking though.

That write-up actually makes me think about perhaps re-listening to it now with a softer stance. Parade remains a favourite.
