I have zero clue about hairdo's. I'd normally just go to the barbers and ask for "a tidy up" or just plain old "number 6 please"

Now that it's quite long I'd like to experiment a bit but also have no idea what to ask for, and need some care advice (like how the hell do I stop it looking like I've been dragged backwards through a hedge after half an hour or so, I throw all sorts of conditioners at it but it puffs up, flies away, sticks out and just generally will not behave)

just bring a picture of a hair style you like.

This and the fact I have basically no fashion sense and if I even knew what I wanted, no clue of whether it'd look any good on me. I need someone to say "ah you have soandso type hair you should do this"

If you’ve not had a haircut for a while maybe treat yourself to a haircut at an expensive salon where they can give you a consultation and talk through your options. They’ll be able to recommend something suitable for your hair type rather than a barber that will just want to give you a short back and sides.
