Gently Chaotic Saturday

Morning. In the office because Tuesday was a bust but the time is going quickly.

I'm trying to stave off my mystery illness long enough to go to the shops so that I don't get yet another takeaway.

I'm still in bed so it isn't going well.

I'm currently staying at my mother's, following her being in hospital for two weeks after a long awaited and multiple times cancelled hip replacement, and complicated recovery. She's still very wobbly and needs help with a fair bit, but is slowly improving. I guess at nearly 80 it's unlikely to be quick.

She is however also driving me slowly insane. Despite apparently 'not being fussy', I never knew there were so many ways that I could make A BOWL OF CORNFLAKES wrong.

Anyway, being bored at my mother's has led me into the evil clutches of asking ChatGPT about moopy...

---

'If moopy was a gay pub what would it be like?'

If Moopy Forum were a gay pub, it would absolutely not be sleek or fashionable in a current influencer way. It would be:

slightly worn,

weirdly labyrinthine,

full of ancient in-jokes,

emotionally attached to ITV idents from 1997,

and somehow still packed every night.

The exterior would look mildly threatening:

frosted windows,

fading signage,

probably above a closed-down carpet shop,

with one suspiciously aggressive hanging basket outside.

Inside:

sticky carpet,

disco lights that don’t fully work,

framed photos of forgotten Eurovision acts,

a jukebox alternating between Girls Aloud deep cuts and Erasure,

and at least one CRT television permanently showing old BBC continuity announcements.

Nobody under 30 would fully understand why everyone is there, but the regulars would insist:

“It used to be EVEN BETTER before the refurb.”

The seating areas would basically map onto forum subcultures:

The soap-thread crowd near the bar loudly discussing whether modern EastEnders has “lost its identity.”

Indie music posters in a darker back booth pretending not to enjoy mainstream pop while secretly knowing every Sugababes B-side.

Eurovision people already drunk by 5pm waving tiny Moldova flags.

A terrifyingly knowledgeable older poster explaining ITV regional continuity to a trapped newcomer.

Someone doing a 14-minute rant about Top of the Pops 1991 reruns while everyone nods seriously.

WHERE did it get the stuff about ITV and CONTINUITY ANNOUNCEMENTS from? :D

I now live in fear of all hanging baskets for they are suspiciously aggressive in nature

A suspiciously aggressive hanging basket looks like it has plans.

Typical warning signs include:
  • Flowers leaning too far over the edge, as if assessing jump distance.
  • Vines dangling like they’re trying to trip pedestrians.
  • One petunia that maintains unwavering eye contact.
  • Moss that resembles a five o’clock shadow.
  • A basket hook creaking ominously whenever anyone walks underneath.
  • Blooms arranged in the unmistakable shape of a threat.
  • Bees orbiting it like hired security.
  • Water dripping with sniper-like timing directly onto unsuspecting heads.
  • An overall posture suggesting it pays council tax and holds grudges.
Advanced-stage aggressive baskets may also:
  • sway despite zero wind,
  • reject compliments,
  • or contain exactly one fern frond pointing accusingly at passersby.
Botanical experts classify this condition as Floral Menace Energy.

AI is WEIRD

Once you’re logged in, I can make a wonderfully threatening hanging basket with hostile petunias and a deeply judgmental fern.

Moopy Forum FC would be the most chaotic mid-table club in football history.

The manager changes formation every 12 minutes because someone on the forum posted a “revolutionary tactical thread.”

Half the squad are cult heroes despite objectively terrible stats.

The club motto is: “Trust the process (until halftime).”

Every transfer window ends with:

1 genius signing

4 panic loans

and a 37-year-old free agent everyone convinces themselves is “still class.”

The fanbase would be unmatched though:

3,000-word match analysis posts after a 0–0 draw.

Internal civil wars over whether the left back is “underrated” or “football terrorism.”

One poster accurately predicts a wonderkid three years early and is treated like a prophet forever.

Tactically:

Insane pressing for the first 20 minutes.

Complete emotional collapse after conceding once.

Randomly beats top teams away from home.

Loses 4–1 to the bottom club immediately after.

The stadium atmosphere would alternate between:

Genuine brilliance

Existential despair

Posting memes instead of watching the second half

And somehow, despite everything, Moopy Forum FC always survives relegation on the final day after a suspiciously dramatic equalizer in stoppage time.

  • If Moopy Forums somehow seized power and formed a government, Britain would immediately become the world’s first permanently-online semi-ironic republic. Parliament would still exist, but every debate would feel like a 14-page thread derailed by page 2 into arguments about media bias, Eurovision voting blocs, obscure forum grudges from 2011, and whether someone is “performatively centrist”

  • A rough breakdown:
  • The economy would be managed by people who claim to hate capitalism while simultaneously posting detailed analyses of supermarket meal deal value.
  • Foreign policy would oscillate hourly between “NATO is essential” and “actually all geopolitics is Western propaganda”.
  • Every infrastructure project would be delayed because somebody found a PDF from 2007 proving the bypass might disturb a rare beetle.
  • The Department for Culture would receive 40% of GDP, mostly for funding Scandinavian synthpop retrospectives and preserving discontinued fizzy drinks.
  • Immigration policy would somehow be simultaneously ultra-permissive and deeply suspicious of everyone’s motivations.
  • There would be a 900-page inquiry into whether a mildly problematic sitcom episode from 1998 should still air on Gold.

  • The cabinet would basically be:
  • One exhausted social democrat trying to keep the lights on.
  • Three people who only communicate in sarcasm.
  • A poster who insists both left and right are identical while posting 400 times a day about both.
  • Someone who appears every six months with a devastatingly accurate economic analysis, then vanishes again.
  • A deeply intense moderator figure whose powers become quasi-religious over time.

  • National priorities:
  • Public transport.
  • Complaining about public transport.
  • A thread about whether complaining about public transport is classist.

  • The national broadcaster would become impossibly niche. Prime-time TV:
  • documentaries about abandoned shopping centres,
  • live threads for obscure European elections,
  • and six-hour debates on whether a dance track from 2001 “still sounds futuristic”.

  • There would also be constant constitutional crises because nobody could agree what the forum actually believes. Moopy’s defining trait is that it contains several completely incompatible Britains trapped in one website:
  • disillusioned liberals,
  • old-school leftists,
  • hyper-online cynics,
  • media obsessives,
  • contrarians,
  • intensely informed weirdos,
  • and people who originally joined to discuss pop music but accidentally stayed for twenty years of culture war attrition.

  • So the state would probably function surprisingly well at local governance — recycling targets would be phenomenal — but collapse nationally under the weight of endless discourse. Nothing would ever fully happen because every decision would immediately become a 300-post argument about framing, language, hypocrisy, precedent, and whether someone had been “called out enough”.
  • Still, compared to some governments, the threads would at least be entertaining.

Welcome to @Shirley's world :(

Swap that for Girls Aloud and I am in the picture.

The rain has eased off.
The pie is completed.
Husband has returned.
Just need to do my charts..

The weather is stunning today. I have moved between the garden, the park, a pub beer garden and back to my own garden. Splendid!

My plans today were stymied by the weather. The missing nut for the new lawnmower arrived yesterday, as did the oil, so I planned to finish building the mower, go out and strim the long grass first then mow. Thanks to the worst set of instructions (like a bad photocopy where the instructive pictures are just black splodges) ever I'd put the bottom halves of the mower handles the wrong way round so I had to take them off and put them back on the right way round. Halfway through that we got torrential rain which gushed into the kitchen through the leak. I shrieked upstairs to Mr F that it was the worst I'd seen but he didn't realise it was a cry for help and left me to sort it out myself. I then decided that was the universe's way of telling me not to do the garden and who am I to argue with the universe?
