Out in two weeks and being carefully shielded from professional critics so far… :eyes:

Feels like this is going to be the film that sends Paul Mescal silly big on a global scale.

I'm sure it'll make money regardless, but I have no faith that Ridley Scott is still capable of delivering at the level he was with the first film.

I'm quietly confident this will be just as good (in an 8/10 way) as the first.

Paul Mescal is ridiculously hot, quite surprised he was chosen but I hope it works out for him.

I got more into this as it went on, but overall:

:meh:

Denzel Washington, Dundus the monkey, and the Jedward Emperors were my favourite things about it. Some of the deaths were terrific too. I love me some Mescal normally, but he barely registered in this. Man was just THERE. And why didn't he look hot? Why were none of the men allowed to look hot? The styling was all off.

I spent most of the second half thinking about the logistics and the team of Roman engineers/slaves who had to fill the Colosseum (quite a porous looking building) with WATER and SHARKS in the space of like 2 days and then empty it out and have it all dry again a few days later. MY MIND BOGGLED. There would probably be a more interesting film in that.

It’s perfectly serviceable and ok for a rainy sunday afternoon, but .. a weak, nasty, mad and .. gay emperor? really ? At this moment in time it felt completely wrong

Really enjoyed this. I was thoroughly entertained throughout and it breezed along at a nice pace that was never boring. The monkey and Matt Lucas provided great comic relief at times.

Can’t two men go for picnics on the beach, and swim in secret ravines, and take loving candid photos of each other, without the assumption that they’re playing HIDE THE SAUSAGE?!?

This was entirely average and a more or less complete rehash of the first, unsurprisingly.

Just watched this, its an averagely good watch, the sharknado coliseum was fucking ridic but its a good gladiator by the nubers sequel. I do agree Mescal should have been hotter. Very odd.

Now watching Rob Beckett on the real gladiators.
