Gustaph - Because Of You (Belgium 2023)

Probably one of the biggest surprises in the recent years. I remember the mockery and the sneers when Gustaph won Eurosong, people thought he would finish last in the semi and then, months later, things started to shift. By the time the contest in Liverpool came, he became beloved by most and in the end, he brought Flanders their second best result of all time. Deservedly, because the song is a banger and the man is a sweetheart. Afterwards, he finished second in the Belgian version of The Masked Singer and had a few more top 40 hits on the Flemish singles chart and a top 5 album.

Eurosong was not too shabby either that year, with the big favourite turning her staging into a trip inducing fever dream



The indie girl being all introverted and artsy and ending up in a fight with Rybak



The former entrant in a duet with his wife being read to filth by Rybak who called them plagiarisers.

A fairly average song but elevated massively by a charismatic performer. The whole thing just felt so fun. I loved how the stage show really brought the backing vocalists in - which makes sense given Gustaph spent most of his career working in that field.

Also DELIGHTED that VoR finally got his prophesied Eurovision top ten
