i'm not sure i properly got the fuss back in the day but this has really emerged as one of gwen's finest moments from the unasuming chorus, to the lovely video, to the heart-warming sentiment which really hits a nerve with me these days.

It's a brilliantly understated song. It's got that kinda bittersweet shyness about it.
 
One of my faves... in fact probably my favouritist GS song. Cute and honest lyrics too.

It's a really lovely song.

She always had a knack for writing quite obviously personal songs without needing to go down the bitter ex route. Relatable QUEEN (from 1995 to 2005).

Such a great vocal on this song. Nobody else could do it justice.

Having went through a break up (relatively) recently this was one of my go to tracks.
 
The inaudible bit where she sounds like she's making patronizing baby noises and the "circles and triangles" sense of twinkly beauty are my favourite parts. The Richard X remix also hits the spot. Terrible storyline in the video - I think we get that you like that theme already, love.
 
I love it. She does pop melancholy so well, and this has aged a hell of a lot better than the likes of "Rich Girl", "Hollaback Girl" et al.
 
Didn't know so many people hated her. Compared to some of her contemporaries she's so much more bearable.
 
RARE has overtaken as my favorite moment from this awbul bitch. What a load of CUNT SHITE that last album was except for this little gem courtesy of Julia Michaels and co I know Gwen is also credited as a co-writer but then again Victoria Beckham ALSO DID THAT.

And Gwen still clearly loves Tony which makes the song, video and lyrics even sadder. She may be cool with it but she isn't over him.

I’m not on board with this song. I’ve never been able to separate it from the image of her parading Asian women around like props (or rather slaves REALLY) for every promo appearance for the horrible L.A.M.B project (you know she had each of those four women renamed to Love, Angel, Music and Baby? So slave trade. So wow.)

This song is very emotional, and I can’t emotionally connect to monsters.

The fact that Twitter went for CHER with cultural appropriation accusations whilst this narcissistic bitch is unscathed is an ABOMINATION.

Maybe your definition of slavery differs from mine but 4 Japanese-American dancers being handpicked and paid by Stefani to be her on stage dancers and entourage for the best part of 18 months doesnt seem like a raw deal to me. I imagine every female dancer in America would have killed to be in their shoes.

I’m saying the imagery and gimmick of it made me uncomfortable at the time, and still does today. I think using any people as props in that way is unsettling, and whether or not they are getting paid is missing the point - I’m sure you could find people desperate enough for money to do anything. In fact, that kind of adds to my point. Imagine if Gwen Stefani was a man doing it and tell me again you don’t find it exploitative.
 
Out of interest, was there any significant backlash from the Japanese community about Gwen's cultural appropriation then or now?
 
Watch from 8:00-9:00 as Gwen proudly informs Jonathan Ross that the women are part of her IMAGINATION, and then laughs off Ross’ suggestion that they should give him and Peter Kay a handjob, ‘seeing as they’re not real’

Not to be a spokesperson for the Japanese, what counts as "cultural appropriation" varies from community to community. They have a higher tolerance level for things like Karlie Kloss's Vogue shoot in a geisha-esque outfit and Netta's ESC staging. Not sure if it still counts as "appropriation" if the community in question doesn't go up in arms about it.
 
Though it's also worthy to consider the Japanese in Japan and the Japanese diaspora separately, given how their cultural attitudes have ostensibly splintered off
 
considering the occasional blackface on TV, they don’t get to be offended (but my impression is they aren’t anyway)

I remember the response to Avril's HELLO KITTY song was that it was UTTERLY UNTHINKABLY RACIST in the Western media, while Japan was like 'cool'.
