Has Moopy turned into Mumsnet? Exploitation? :rofl: I can almost guarantee that the Japanese would be delighted that they were featured in a popular Western music video. I never thought about it in 2004 and I don't now. I genuinely don't understand how people can possibly be offended by a stupid music video. I dont even think there is a single person who would think that way unless they saw that point made in the media. Embarrassing.

GOBBY mares thinking they are demure and sophisticated by putting on a kimono.

I never heard anything like that from even my meanest friends about cultural appropriation, if anything they are a bit flattered that people like their culture (and picked them over the Chinese)

As Cool Japan is being edged out by Cool Korea, I think they’re just happy to be talked about. If there’s a problem, people tend to be less “HOW DARE YOU” and more “I don’t know her”

My husband came home unexpectedly and I was in the kitchen doing something I probably shouldn't have been doing but which I do every time I'm home alone.

I was having an imaginary interview on Radio 4 Woman's Hour about my new, hugely critically acclaimed novel.

He walked in just as I was saying to Jane Garvey "That's an interesting question, Jane. The book's really a reflection on womanhood at times of crisis".

He was just stood there at the kitchen door and said "What is? Who's Jane?" and then looked around the corner to our dining table, presumably expecting to find someone called Jane who'd popped around for a brew

But instead we get IRATE Gwen Stefani fans :(

"Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" - particularly the Native American costume.

I mean, to a certain extent I do agree it has gone too far when people like Katy Perry have to issue official statements apologising for cultural appropriation for a particular performance but even back in 2004 I thought Gwen Stefani's LAMB thing was a bit off using these women basically as 'accessories'. She just came across like a typical ignorant American if you ask me.

In fairness, Gwen did get raked through the coals for it back then, I remember Margaret Cho was very vocal about it.

She is fetishising the notion of the silent, subservient Asian woman though, rather than nicking something off another culture, so I think it's more TONE DEAF RACISM than cultural appropriation.

The queen of cultural appropriation surely must be white Italo-American Ms Ciccone, who's had a pop at being Latino, Black, Hindu, Jewish, a Japanese geisha and an Indian goddess among others.

Where would American culture even be without cultural appropriation? On one hand western pop culture has exposed cultural references to so many people. On the other, it can so easily be misused.

I think it comes down to WHAT you're referencing. The Native American headdress I can understand. It's a special item meant only for the most of unique occasions. But Madonna in a sari? No. That's simply just fashion and it looks wonderful.

There's no way Gwen could have gotten away with what she did in today's climate. The notion of cultural appropriation was underdeveloped, and as Penny pointed out, she got rakes for her racism rather than appropriation.

And yes, appropriation is complex. Those who wish to disengage with it hate these complexities and would rather it was a 'one size fits all' definition.
 
She got a bit of a dragging for that 'cowboys and Indians' themed music video she did with No Doubt a few years back. They apologised, deleted it and now it apparently only exists on a weird anime youtube channel.



God that No Doubt comeback was horribly disappointing :(

And as for Madonna. Well, I know I will come across as an apologetic loon but I really don't feel that much of what she has done is appropriation and mostly because it is about her intent and execution. She puts herself in the centre of it and embodies characters so there is an element of suspension of disbelief and commitment to the 'art' on her part more so than "isn't mindi pretty?" though I am sure there is also some of that.

And there have been numerous articles throughout the years accusing Madonna of being a "plantation mistress" with her 'white-washing' of black culture and also exploiting gay subculture by taking "Vogue" to the mainstream (both of which I absolutely and categorically disagree with) but that's a whole other discussion.
 
This song is so amazing. Tied with It's My Life as my favourite Gwen/No Doubt moment. She does melancholy so well. What a woman.

I do really like it, but I've never been able to love it.

Not even sure why really. It's a perfect pop tune on paper and it's executed great. I just can't get excited over it.
 
This is definitely 10/10 and one of the best pop songs I have ever heard.
The video tops it off.

She still looks unbelievable. I don’t know if she has had any work done but if she has someone needs to get me her surgeons number PRONTO!
 
She was quite heavy into botox 2 or 3 years ago, but I'm not sure about lately, she looks more natural these days. Hard to tell under all that makeup though.

I'll never ever suffer the emotional growth and maturity it takes to relate to this song but it and the lyrics are lovely :disco:
