some mornings I can't help but wake up and CHOOSE GWEN.

I also played Fluorescent and U Started It which both hold up beautifully. as I always say, The Sweet Escape was the best 6-song EP of all time.

A booming ballad that burns out beauty or else a souvenir of when Gwen's collaborative dalliances created magical, explicit pulses of pop. It made me buy the album when I heard it in one of those stores I used to go in to buy music. If only the rest of the album reached such stark, gloopy heights, although it does seem obvious Keane did most of the dirty work and I'd loved to have seen their faces hearing her additional lyric "why do you act so stupid?" Its hooks on hooks, hooked on honour hovers somewhere between an 11 and no number being enough.

I wouldn't call it a ballad (by any stretch?!) but god Wonderful Life is just the most tremendous song. a moody electroclash banger about coming to terms with the suicide of your first kiss? when the fuck will your faves? :disco:

I think The Singles 1992–2003 was possibly the first GH I ever owned - I remember buying it (or bootlegging it?) after being obsessed with It's My Life which was all over radio and TV, and probably at that point the only other No Doubt song I consciously knew was Hey Baby (which I specifically recall hearing for the first time on Radio 1 on the bus home from school and thinking WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS :disco:)

listening to it today, as I am right now, feels like a homecoming. WHAT a body of work. they were a sublimely brilliant, utterly effortless (and to this day still quite underrated) band who covered a lot of musical ground. No Doubt and Gwen together are definitely "one" of my 5 fave acts ever and a really integral part of my obsession with pop music.

all of which to say: Early Winter will have to deal with being #11. :eyes:
 
Not enough 4 in the Morning love. Sits alongside Early Morning as the duo of fantastic mid-tempo ballads from the, er, questionable album.
 
OMG personal classic. Early Winter was always my iTunes era top song. It makes a luxury out of being enjoyably depressed - and somehow she seems thrilled that the whole thing’s about to die. It’s very optimistic in the chorus, even TRIUMPHAL by the time we get to the fade out.

And, may I say, one of the best uses of a fade ending in any song!
 
One of her absolute BEST even if it's just a Keane song through and through, they even liked it so much that they sang it once I saw them live (With original lyrics of course).

I bought the CD single back then and the live version that's included as a b-side just showcased how her backing singer is an amazing singer, even more so than Gwen :D
