Gwen Stefani - Let Me Reintroduce Myself

It all seemed to go tits up as far back as that second album when she did a Cheryl and basically gave us a collection of LEFTOVERS - which was mostly very apparent - served up as a whole new campaign.

I still have time for her and certainly not here for the retrospective cancelling that gets flung her way. The No Doubt comeback was good even it wasn't successful and she still has the odd gem. Admittedly I've not kept up with all of it and sounds like I've not missed out. Or maybe I have and just FORGOT

Prior to its release, I do remember reading quite a lot that Sweet Escape was supposed to be a collection of leftovers from the LAMB sessions but then it was cleared up that it only applied to the (largely SHITE) Pharrell tracks since Sweet Escape, 4 In The Morning and Early Winter were recorded especially for it.
Kinda makes sense since they don't scream leftover to me whereas Yummy, Wind it up, Don't get it twisted, Now that you got it do and they're one of the worst pieces of "music" to ever have graced upon us.

I don't think Wonderful Life was a leftover either. And that's the greatest thing on The Sweet Escape.

It was a leftover actually - not sure why she didn't include it on LAMB as it would have fit in perfectly. In the end, the only left-over songs on TSE were "U Started It" and "Wonderful Life" but the album did sound a bit rushed. I've been listening to "Flourescent" lately :disco:

Whenever I hear that song the line "Yohji Yamamoto, I' m hanging with the locals" gets stuck in my head for hours. I might need help.

Hun you have it all wrong. The Pharrell tracks aside from U Started It were all recorded for The Sweet Escape. Also Yummy is amazing, especially THAT outro.

I did think in the back of my head when typing that about Gwen's Leftovers Project that the myth had been dispelled some time back but couldn't remember!

The point is there was some proper trash on there and at the time felt like such a step down from LAMB.

And even then still an afterthought, bunged on the end as it was. Wonderful Life and Early Winter are two of the best pop songs of the last 20 years for me, hard to believe they come from the dregs of that project (or not as the case is with one of them). So had she put Wonderful Life on LAMB, The Sweet Escape would have been EVEN MORE UNLISTENABLE.
 
this is out. it's fun - nice ska-ish poppy "reintroduction" rather than a big lead single for sure, but she sounds great and i'll be playing it
 
It's nice. Feels a bit more No Doubt than solo Gwen, which isn't a bad thing in my eyes, but might be for poor Tom, Tony, Adrian et al :(

Yes Yummy really is the shit. I became obsessed with it again after Bieber released his song with the same title.

I remember Wind It Up getting a very harsh reaction but I've always really LOVED it.

I was going to mention that in my top 10, but I wasn't 100% sure it was true and didnt want to have made it up. I think thats part of the reason I love it so much. That song, and Cool actually, are great in that they tackle such unique topics but make them universal.

Simple Kind of Life too

Its a shame Hollaback Girl is her biggest hit, because it makes her musical output look so shallow, when it is anything but that
 
She has a knack for a good EMOTIONAL moment it seems. Don't Speak, Wonderful Life, Simple Kind Of Life etc

However this will always be the most wonderful thing her name is ever put to:

I do agree that some of her past lyrics are GOLD but she did not write Cool herself, though she had the good eye to see that it fitted her and her story to a tee.

It SADDENS me that she is going back to this dancehall-lite style but she'll do it solo and not with the band. They would have OOMPHED this track for sure.
 
Love it! Maybe not the song I'm going to be listening to in three years but today it got around 20 spins. Maybe Rihanna could have done more with that bassline?

It features her brother Eric as well as Gabe and Stephen who toured with No Doubt and solo Gwen for years, on instruments. Tom, Tony and Adrian not invited.

They fucking need to SORT IT OUT. If Fleetwood Mac can, so can these guys. This whole "I'm a SKA CHICK" schtick rings hollow otherwise.

I'm #TeamTom on this 100% though. And after listening to Dreamcar's album, which was frankly MILES BETTER than anything Gwen has farted in the last DECADE, I kind of think that artistically she NEEDS them more than they need her.

it's exactly the opposite of a disowning - she's just saying "don't think I'm sat on your record shelf collecting dust, I'm still making music and finding joy in that" :angel:
