I'll get the ball rolling on this. According to @Indie we can get hashtags for a year for $10 (about £8, €8,50) a year and an evening of his work.

I think it could replaces tags without the problem of keyboard warriors.

Obviously this is not an official poll and last decision for the mod lead but just putting the idea put there!

I'm for! But questions:

What is the function? Will there be trends a la twitter? Will it make us more searchable? How will it differ from if I were to just type "#kylie" now.

How would they work in practice? Are they kept in your own post? Or at the top of the thread, etc?

I presume it would have a list of the trending hashtags and would be searchable.

I presume just like a tweet. Hashtag the term or word and it becomes searchable.

Yeah I imagine if you click on #kylie you get a list of all posts with #kylie in it.

Honestly, it's almost not the function that's selling me, it's just that every bloody where has hastags and we really should too! Especially if it helps with google.

Personally I think they would be quite untidy looking and I'm not sure how they would enhance the Moopy experience.

As long as it’s something added to the post and not anonymous I don’t see an issue.

So they would have two main uses, I think
  • legitimately hashtagging posts so they can be collected together - i don't think anyone would bother
  • for humour purposes like #rubbishgai #dubstartsafight etc. - i don't think they would be all that funny?
And I just think it'd be messy-looking. Don't mind giving them a go but I'm not chomping at the bit by any means

Yeah good point, maybe I'm just not that funny

Some more detail which I believe would apply to their use here

Hash Tags

Not only a powerful tool for finding individual posts, they can also be used as a form of expression. With powerful "trending" features powering the "Trending Hash Tags" widget, you will always know what are the most popular hash tags being used across your site.

If your members use hash tags to describe their own posts, you will find they can be an invaluable tool for quickly finding other posts with similar content. DragonByte User Tagging uses XenForo 2's search engine result rendering to display other posts with the same hash tag, meaning no additional customisation if you have already customised your search results on your site. This also means it will be easier to expand support to other content types in the future

Speaking of other content types, like user group mentions, hash tags are fully supported in profile posts!

Using the same system as forum and threads, users can also "Watch" hash tags, receiving on-site notifications, and optionally also an email whenever a hash tag they are watching is used anywhere on the site!

This only applies to Xenforo v.2.0. Our forum runs on Xenforo v1.0.

Could be worth a try.

People are really voting AGAINST this?

I really thought it would be a fun/ potentially useful addition. We already @ 's which don't hurt our eyes.

Actually after seeing my post, I’m a no
Some people think that hashtags can get in the way of the readability of a post, to combat that we provide the option to not show the # so it reads just like a normal #post with #words as links.

I presume we're still on Xenforo 1.5(.X)? You'll probably want to look in to upgrading to 2.1 (or 2.0.X at a minimum) in the not-too-distant future, as 1.5 reached end-of-life at the tail end of last year, and, more crucially, won't receive any further security patches. I'm sure the hosts have their own wider contingencies, but it won't cover vulnerabilities in the software.

Oh what a can of worms.

Yeah I thought this seemed cool but it would actually take away much of the point of having them... Either have them or don't I would say

Well I don't see any reason not to give them a try. For less than a tenner a year switching them off won't hurt too much.

Yep, they're worth a try if Indie doesn't mind

But I'm not changing my vote as I want to be on the right side of history

We're DOOMED!

Also it could be a compromise in lieu of tags which are far controversial and less transparent.

Tags WILL COME UP AGAIN I have no doubt. This may pacifiy.

If it helps searching that would be good, I hate the search function we have now, I end up using google to search Moopy pages
The search function here is the worst I've ever seen, totally useless.

Can someone link me to a forum that is using them?

I’m a no. I think they’d just descend into chaos like the tags did.
