Although it should be additionally noted (and you might remember this) is that purchase of a Xenforo licence has never included automatic security patches after 12 months. You need to pay an ongoing subscription for that. So we've not had a security patch since we installed the thing. Same principle applied for vbulletin.
 
To be honest, I wonder if we ought to have the tag conversation first.

Look I'm all for bringing back tags but honestly they're more trouble than they're worth. If it is worth anything I think it's too soon. Let those wounds heal first. I don't see an issue with at least having something to play with in the meantime.

I think the obvious concern is that we’ll end up in a similar situation to the one we were in with vBulletin, in the sense that the longer we hold off, the harder it is to upgrade, and the urgency/complexity becomes even greater over time, as well.

That’s the downside to software-as-a-service - the options and routes to upgrade change frequently and it’s easy to get left behind if you don’t have a never-ending pot of money.

Should the situation arise in the future, I’d always be happy to lend a hand, you know that.
 
Oh I'm all in favour of never getting tags back.

But if we're going into getting hashtags from a 'could be a compromise for tags' perspective or anticipating the discussion around them coming up again, I'd just much rather decide once and for all whether we are or aren't entertaining that notion again.

I doubt we'd get a decent majority either way on that.

I wonder if we could rattle the tin again. We did provide a useful service for a lot of people over lockdown.

I wouldn't mind giving hashtags a go, I think it'll be hard to tell how people will use them until they're implemented.
 
I think I'll abstain. I don't personally see the need or benefit, but I don't feel strongly enough against them if others are keen to give them a go.
