House of the Dragon (GoT Prequel)

Valyrian is the language (the country they came from is Valyria). Velaryon is the house in question and yes they exist in modern GoT however they are much diminished and don’t factor in. We don’t know why but you would assume they declined along with the Targaryans.

Valyrian is the ancient race/language, Velaryon is the house. I can’t remember if this was mentioned in the original series, but in the books the head of the house was killed in the Battle of the Blackwater and the new Lord was a small child so they were basically irrelevant from that point.
 
Oh and a friendly warning, if any of you are rewatching GoT and get to a scene with Joeffry and Margeary in the sept talking you should skip it because it spoils the end of HotD :D

As soon as they started talking about the houses again I zoned right out. Maybe I don’t need to concern myself with all that yet?
 
I'm going to watch the second episode but I very much doubt I'll ever be paying enough attention to work out who's in the House of Deréon and who's in the House of Frasier.

He was never going to stay on full time. He's way too in demand. He has a deal with HBO and he'll develop other projects with them. After what he did on Hardhome, The Battle Of The Bastards and The Winds Of Winter, he's probably the most in-demand director in long form television.

Watched the first two episodes yesterday. Not sold yet. The violence felt a BIT MUCH even by GoT standards, and it all felt rather DOUR. I'll persevere for now though.

Also I really can't get over the WIGS. Matt Smith and Paddy Considine just look completely ludicrous. I'm all in favour of more inclusive casting, but the mixed race children also looked quite absurd in that regard.

None of these actors is looking good in that unnaturally blond hair. Especially not the Queen who never was (who also looks like she’s just shaved her moustache).
 
They’ve put Ep 1 on YouTube in full, presumably as a JAB at Lord of the Rings

Fewer than 2k views a day later though? 🥴

 
Another good episode and we got 45 minutes of lovely politicking GoT and so many characters introduced for a second that will play a much bigger role.

Loved the inside of the tent and old lady Redwyne that Rhaenyra snaps at is Olenna Tyrell (née Redwyne) ancestor.
 
I enjoyed the machinations of the hunt more than the crab silliness, though I am glad that they didn't drag that out any longer.

Also thought that Paddy Considine was really very good in this episode.
 
Yeah the Crab stuff was there to give them a big battle scene (it needs to happen to move the story but it’s prufanyctory and so it serves as visual spectacle more than anything).
 
They seemed to build up this crab person and then end it all very quickly, it felt like we were going to get some insight into this mysterious character but no.

Battle scene was well done. Politics was good. I don’t feel as invested in the characters as I want to be but I’m also conscious that I probably wasn’t after 3 reps of GoT either.

I think it lacks likeable characters or those you want to root for. The likes of the Dornish knight are still a bit 2 dimensional for my liking at the moment.

Matt Smith is a wonder though. I’ve never really watched any of the things he’s known for so this is my first proper look at him and even though he’s known to date for other roles (Dr Who, The Crown) he takes on this like he’s born to play it.

I just need the stakes to be higher. Something more than just who is the heir. Especially now that that mini war is over.

I couldn’t even figure out who was trying to kill who in that battle but it was nice to look at and the CGI was better than what they do for Kings Landing now Dubrovnik is in Cornwall 👀

And clearly the queen with the club foot sitting gossiping with his hags is the likeable character to root for.
 
I used to live for those moments when the dragons used their fire. This battle scene was such a snoozefest I kept wishing that Deamon would die.

Still confused about who’s who and what’s going on.
 
I thought it was a much better episode than the second. Rhaenyra of course totally owned it, and Alicent is becoming more interesting.

LOL at the Hand's horrifying suggestion as to whom Rhaenyra should marry :D

I actually think Paddy Considine as Viserys is the series' weak spot. he seems kind of miscast to me. or he's just written as such a weakling that he's fundamentally not that interesting, except when he snaps.

the battle scenes were maybe the least effective part but I love all the POLITICS! it's giving. intrigued to see how Daemon will be integrated going forward.

They were talking about a crazy suicide mission before the king’s letter arrived so when that got there Daemon decided to do it (distract them so another dragon can finish them).

Fun fact: before he had a legitimate son, Henry VIII was considering asking the Pope to allow his daughter (the future Mary I) to marry his illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy.

Sadly there were no dragons.
