From the trailer I assumed this was a fun but generic comedy, but apparently J.Lo has genuine Oscar buzz for her performance here.

One of the most anticipated titles of the festival is fact-based drama Hustlers, which stars Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Lizzo and Cardi B as strippers using their wiles to rob their wealthy clientele. The film, which is tracking for an impressive $26m opening weekend, is also getting early Oscar buzz for Lopez. “I think people forget that she’s such a gifted actor,” writer-director Lorene Scafaria said to Variety. “I was so excited that she was going to play a character on top of that. In a way, the role fits her like a glove, but it’s also a glove with spikes on it.”

More fuel for my ongoing theory that J.Lo is my generation's Joan Crawford.

:disco:

This trailer has been playing in cinemas for quite some time. It looks quite fun, so long as it actually is how it’s being marketed and isn’t some dreary shit like The Bling Ring.

A quick twitter search only turned up 2 tweets about J.lo future Oscar winner so I wouldn’t count that as buzz. But hey anything can happen.

The trailer looks good and The Bling Ring was good.

this is currently looking at a projected $27m opening weekend, which, if I'm not mistaken, would be her biggest opening weekend EVER (not including animated stuff like Ice Age) :o at the age of 50 no less!

She really has been phenomenally smart in keeping her music and film projects alive so that she's always making bank and keeping her profile high. For a once-ridiculed movie star she's found her niche very nicely and picks projects well. Unlike, say, Jennifer Aniston who's also working in the same realm.

Reactions from Toronto are very positive.

God this is getting absolute RAVES. I started this thread with tongue firmly in cheek but I think this might actually happen :D

It's easy to forget how hot she was as an actress pre the music.

Selena was a good start and Out Of Sight was next level.

80 on Metacritic :o she might well be in the Supporting Actress mix, and Wu in Best Actress! I suspect it will all come down to how will this does at the box office (and I imagine it's going to blow all expectations away)

i think she's an awful actress when she isn't playing herself and i lost my irrational sympathy for her when she started churning out the dreary brain-dead latino music. it's all just a paycheck for henny from the block.

the original rita ora, no doubt.

i still can't believe gaga's grubby hands didn't taint the best actress award.

i mean i actually like (more than a couple of aspects about) the woman, but come on.

This is delightful (no need to bother looking at Jimmy, obviously)

That would have been better if they had done it in proper chronological order like the actual History of Dancing video. Unfortunately some of the later ones I had no clue about! The only Senorita I know is Timberlake, but it wasn’t that.

Some are speculating that this will open with 30m+ stateside now :o I'm seeing ads/digital billboards everywhere in Amsterdam too - it being a big commercial success would give Jenny some serious momentum for the nomination I think

OK, so it’s FUN. J’Lo looks fucking amazing not just for her age but for any age. It’s very kind of Wolf of Wall Street but with a few more morals, but Oscars? No.

Points added for the Janet songs.

Where did you see it Ells?

The Toronto buzz is mindblowing and has her down as a dead cert for a Best Supporting win.

What do you mean where? It came out on Friday and I saw it in the afternoon on my day off.

Definitely not Oscar worthy, but perhaps Golden Globes. It would depend on the competition though, perhaps ScarJo for JoJo Rabbit, which I’ll be seeing at the LFF.

Opens significantly above projections with $33 million in America. :disco: J.Lo's biggest opening weekend of her career and easily in line to cross the $100 million threshold in a matter of weeks.

QUEEN

I'm not a CINEMA QUEEN by instinct but I'm considering breaking that from the buzz alone for this and CATS (2019) :disco:

This was good, the first part suffers from all the stunt casting but once you move to the main 4 women it gets really good.

J. Lo is good but nothing Oscar worthy imo. Constance Wu is great and I love that she’s a modern day Faye Dunway in terms of her reputation.

Loved this. I get that J.Lo isn't doing the most ACTING acting, but my God it's such a star performance, and I wouldn't begrudge her an Oscar for a second. Think Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side, except in a genuinely good movie.

The Fiona Apple pole dance felt like a genuinely iconic cinema moment.

She really is fucking fabulous.

(Sorry lambs xoxo )

I love J.LO and I want to see Hustlers, she looks amazing, but she loves to STEAL from ICONS

One of my favourite things about Hustlers is all the (presumably intentional) throwbacks to her old looks, on account of much of it being set in the early-mid 00s.

I almost screamed when she was casually lounging about her apartment in the All I Have muffler. :D

This! I'd kinda forgotten that she was more of an actress than singer at the start..!

Do you not remember the infamous Movieline interview in the 90s when she said “don’t spit on my craft” when talking about Madonna’s acting career?
