The single that never was.
We will forever remain bitter and twisted about it
But let's face it it wouldn't have been a hit in America I guess which is why the label pulled the plug.
Can you imagine though
Sweaties -
A proper 2000-era futuristic sexy cyberpunk video for the UK and Euro market?
Ugh top 10 Euro frenzy

Seriously though - what a great song. I remember when I bought Music and played the CD.. I was just WTF is this!! It just made no sense! It was so good. It sounded like the future! I thought 'Music' the SANGLE was futuristic enough but my first listen on the tube on my Discman to Impressive Instant was something else. I knew she had 'done it' again and that ROL wasn't a fluke.

The additional percussions were superb live :disco:

Let alone the apocalyptic cyber punk dance routine thing! Ugh.

2000-2001 was peak Dotmusic Madonna era for me. Such nostalgic vibes.

I even hear elements of BJORK in there.
Honestly
What a song
What an album
What an era
WHAT A WOMAN

The song really flaunts itself and Madge was way ahead of the pack here. I wish she'd have managed a compromise of it being a double A side with Amazing as we were denied a video to truly render it iconic.

I absolutely loathe the Drowned World performance of it though. The one posted above is quite something - you can actually taste the manic atmosphere on your tongue.

Unforgivable that it wasn't released as a single. It would have been an inspired choice & the video could only have been :disco: - as for American success, surely another Hot Dance Club Play number 1 was forthcoming.

You know I sort of agree in retrospect. At the time it was fabulous and I (we?) stanned it etc. But now I think ... it could have been more.

Anyway as we know she toyed with bringing it back for Sticky & Sweet on the guitar and mercifully she didn't.

Hopefully if (when?) she goes on tour next she'll bring it back.

It even had remixes commissioned and everything. We all know the story of her pulling 'Amazing' from the DWT setlist to spite the label because of them sabotaging her choice for an Impressive Instant release.
But I do think that it wouldn't have been a hit in America and at the time she was still a big chart force. I think they didn't want a repeat of the Nothing Really Matters scenario - which was a massive US flop.
Also - WIFLFAG already sort of underperformed anyway and I think they didn't want to spend more money on a fourth single if it wasn't going to be a big hit.
It was such a different climate back then.

Why is this not blowing up on TikTok?

Music (the album) was so incredible. I wish she had continued being this experimental.

this not being a single with legendary video featuring iconic futuristic lewks ... her iconography lost out.

I had no idea this performance existed :o wow! (wowwowwowwow!) the European arm of the label should've paid for a video, it would've smashed.

6 / 5 for art.

0 / 5 for being something I actually want to listen to.

It's as IRRITATING and OBNOXIOUS as it was WONDERFULLY EXPERIMENTAL

It absolutely isn't a commercial single though. Radio would not have got on-board, and that still mattered in ye olden days.
