Hollywood is going in on the defence of the Israeli government, big names all over instagram with some weird reverse pyschology around accusing people of anti-semitism for using this incident to blame both sides.

Some people are so weighted down in their narrative that it's really difficult to see how the opposing East v West perspectives on this can ever be fixed.

The West aside, I do wonder how these events will shift perceptions within Israel itself. As I understand it a big part of the appeal of Netanyahu domestically has been his focus on security, which has now been utterly destroyed. Over time, could this end up changing the general public's views about the occupation there? Or will even further-right hardline politicians do well out of this?

My LinkedIn is full of Yanks and Israelis, cannabis is big business in Israel.

The one sidedness of the discourse is upsetting me. I've had to pull back a few times from rearing up, but not one single American has had a thing to say about any of the Palestinian civilians killed or injured.

To be honest, I think Western audiences watching the conflict from YouTube and trying to litigate which side is "right" is futile. There IS no "right and wrong" in geopolitics (or at all, for many people). There are only interests and alliances. In the greater scheme of human history, so-called 'ethics' are one of the many tools that are invoked when they favor national interests and then conveniently shelved away when they don't. Western audiences need to stop projecting their subjective moral standards over these foreign conflicts like they're being 'wise'.

The footage of the militants paragliding into the rave party is chilling and almost surreal. You know Jamie Lee Curtis will be starring as one distressed mother in the obligatory upcoming movie about this.

Still not sure throwing a massive rave for "peace" two kms away from a besieged strip with 2 million people innit is genuinely ignorant or unbelievably arrogant. Not the time/place to do your drugs loves.

I see sleepy Joe is on high alert to make sure Israel "fully defends itself with unlimited American aid". Daily brain exercises of his wife's name and what state he's in must be on hold now with all the rush of blood to his penis for Israel.

I’m so glad you’re here to provide such witty commentary . I have a lot of mixed feelings on all of this as a non-Israeli Jewish person who supports Palestinian freedom but also has friends and acquaintances who lost people in these attacks. But this kind of response is gross and not funny

Thanks sweetie, I happen to have family and friends subjicated and murdered by this apartheid state whose past, present and future is gross and not funny. Im glad you’re not amused.

To be fair there is a huge amount of israelís who are against the treatment of Palestinians and I’d wager a lot of them have seen through the media and propaganda through chemical enlightenment. There is suffering around ever corner and by your logic everyone dancing under the influence of drugs is game to be gunned down while they do it. Sorry but thats a fucking awful take, unless your saying they deserved it for being Jewish in which case you’re being a cunt

I’m sorry you’ve been personally affected by this and I certainly don’t think what the Israeli government has done is right

one of my closest friends is Israeli - he recently returned to Israel from Amsterdam and was supposed to begin university next week, but he's just been called back to the army. I think he's quite shocked by it. I really hope he'll be OK.

tasteless as this wording may be, I do broadly agree with the sentiment. let's not forget that the UK has a strong weapons import and export trade with Israel, the US spends billions each year on funding the Israeli military, etc. it is depressing but entirely predictable to see these same countries who watch on and say nothing when Palestine and Gaza are routinely savaged by the overwhelmingly superior Israeli military suddenly shouting about Israel's "right to defend itself." I mean, scream.

as a non-Israeli, non-Gazan/Palestinian, non-Jew, I feel this discussion is quite sticky territory. difficult to wade into without people making assumptions about your position or intent. this is also one of the first humanitarian crises I can recall that's drawing vastly opposing responses on my social media from people within the same friend circle. it's not a "liberal vs non liberal" response and there's so much complex history to consider that many people including myself aren't fully versed on.

but some people are showing their ass. I have a Mexican friend, who is Jewish and holds really strong views about many things, who says that the images of war she saw over the weekend were the most violent she'd ever seen. and I thought, yeah, because you don't look closely at what's been happening in Palestine - or in Ukraine, or various other wartorn countries. expose your privilege. she routinely tells me Israel is so beautiful because it's the only place in the world that's safe for Jews to live. but she doesn't seem to have the capacity to consider that the regime denies that same human right to Palestinians every single day.

The level of dehumanization towards Palestinians in all the reports and from western politicians is just…..there’s a frenzy being used to justify the destruction happening. I really need to get off Twitter, anyone has a Bluesky invite? Is that better?

The choice of language is very deliberate - Israel's citizens are "killed", Palestine's citizens "die". The language is always passive (and therefore dehumanising) when it comes to the Palestinian people.

I wish I could be horrified by that, but right now there's so much disputed information.

Particularly the beheaded babies line.

I, for one, cannot find it productive to take any 'side'. If you believe that human life has any true and real value, then a 'good guy' no longer remains in this fight for me. There are only losers.

How does that make any sense?

So if a couple of crazies from Belfast decided to bomb London, we'd cut off all power and supplies to the entire Northern Ireland? In what world would that be deemed acceptable and not a massive human rights violation?

Why are people in Gaza treated as though they are not human?

Lots to say here: we in the West are complicit, by virtue of our media and leadership, in the possible cleansing and genocide of a people.

some people might think we shouldn’t take a side / those of us in the west don’t know what we’re talking about, but this is a colonial violence that our states are helping to maintain. We have to take a stance. We mustn’t look away from what is happening. History will judge us.

The accusations of rapes and beheaded babies have made it to the covers of newspapers around the world, but there is still no documented evidence of this. Biden claimed to have seen pictures himself, before his spokesperson had to row back and clarify that he had only been told this from Netanyahu’s office. It might still be true, but what we know is that the IDF has a record of making shit up. Why have these accusations gained so much traction? Some say that it is to manufacture consent for the elimination of Palestinian people in Gaza. Maybe.

An interesting interview with one of the leading experts on Hamas:

All of this. My knowledge isn't in depth enough - plus throw my nationality into the mix, that makes it even stickier.

But it's not like that has stopped people before.
