It’s the Wednesday thread!

I dreamt last night that Moopy had decided to ban the words FUCK and CUNT because some precious snowflake had complained, and for some reason Zu was in charge of manually changing all instances of them to some made-up German word like LEITZEGGER or something.

I was of course immediately composing my I’M LEAVING thread.

"ICH GEHE WEG" surely.

(thanks to Google Translate for that...now to find out that this translation implies the listener is Mexican or somesuch so that I can be immediately CANCELLED)

I was on it for depression in the nineties for a couple of years. For a period being pretty much out of it 24/7 was what I wanted but yes, it got to a point where being groggy (and it's a real DIRTY grogginess as well isn't it - not the fuzzy pleasant kind) was in the way of everything else.

I do think it's a bit NAUGHTY of a prescriber not telling you of its sedative value though. Calling it a 'side effect' is a bit like saying a side effect of paracetamol is helping alleviate a headache.

LET'S MAKE THAT HAPPEN!

We have a facility that can do that - it's why a certain newspaper can't be linked or even named.

So we could, for example, change "cunt" to "Farage" but I don't know if it backdates.

I think it does, doesn't it? I'm sure I've seen really old threads with the D*ily M*il replacement in.

I did think of you @Zu-Klara when I was listening to Susie Dent on the Fortunately podcast talking about how MELLIFLUOUS German is, why it's her favourite language, and how beautiful German poetry is.

I think this calls for an unrequired THINGS I LIKE ABOUT GERMAN list

Z being pronounced TS
The fucked up word order and words which throw the verb to the end of the sentence
The cases
ß
The word for squirrel (Eichhörnchen)
The word for raccoon (Waschbär)

Going to see our new house tomorrow that we've already put a deposit down on without viewing. 2020 is wild.

Compound nouns were my favourite bit of O level German. Well, until the cancelled it one term in and made me do French instead :(

I’m still bitter about being plonked in the French CSE class with morons who relentlessly translated est-ce que as IS IT THAT. Luckily I showed those bitches by refusing to turn up to the CSE exam AND getting a French degree somewhat later in life

I could have sworn that WARMERKARTOFFELSALAT could be one word, but Google says NEIN

Definitely NEIN as WARM is the adjective and you can’t include those in compound nouns. I would have tried to do so if you could :(

Not entirely but almost, thanks to the REFORM DER DEUTSCHEN RECHTSCHREIBUNG VON 1996

The NERVE :oi:

I remember my German teacher having to constantly remind us that our text books were out of date because of this :D

I think it's double-s if followed by a short vowel and ß before a long vowel. So "bissen" but "Straße"

Compound nouns is my absolute favourite thing about DEUTSCH. My favourite being Seeelefant (Manatee) and Schifffahrt (journey on a ship). I think you're officially meant to hyphenate them but FUCK THAT.

And verbs at the end of the sentence :love:. I love it when you get two next to each other.

I did my final oral presentation on this where most people talked about actual issues like HOMELESSNESS or IMMIGRATION POLICIES.

How shockingly earnest and dull. Hopefully they failed and you didn’t :disco:

I could swear I bought some cheese - sorry, KÄSE - in Lidl but it doesn’t seem to be here. I definitely LOOKED at it. If this is the Archangel Kimberley’s interventional attempt to reduce my cholesterol then BAD LUCK HUNTY I FOUND THE REDUCED TRIFLES

Fuming that my sister, who was a PEGGY PATCH FAN, is now denying all knowledge of the existence of Playdays after I sent her that link. “I have no recollection of it”. YEAH RIGHT. Saving face I should think!

That’s where I’ve been purchasing all my MANCHEGO.

To be fair if she was a Peggy Patch fan it’s an indication of some sort of undiagnosed childhood psychosis. Now she’s older and no longer afflicted she’s probably blocked all memories of it.

Like in IT.

Maybe sending her a lovely picture would jog the memory or trigger the PTSD :disco:
