Good morning.

'Ilta-Sanomat is among the papers reporting(siirryt toiseen palveluun) that following a Wednesday evening rejection of a proposal of the national labour market mediator, some 25,000 nurses and other healthcare personnel will walk off the job in six hospital districts on Friday at 6am.

The strike has been called by the municipal employee unions Tehy and SuPer, and will affect the hospital districts of Helsinki and Uusimaa, Pirkanmaa, Southwest Finland, North Ostrobothnia, North Savo and Central Finland.

SuPer and Tehy have pledged to provide urgent care services to protect the lives of patients and prevent permanent, serious injury.'

And the strike has been on for two weeks. I've had to do all my shifts because we don't want to endanger anyone's lives. In Finland, all Health Care people are paid 20-25 ,% less than the other Scandinavian countries. So we are on a strike!

How are are strikes in your country and how affective are they?

Oh, and unless things are getting settled by this thursday, the strike will go nationwise (40 000 nurses)
 
In Finland, Sweden, Norway and think Denmark too, there's a right for a strike. It's legal. You won't get paid for the days you are on the strike. But in my case I get 140€ a day that I'm not working.

And the more I think of it, the more fucked up it sounds. Is it just that I live Finland, where no one needs to suffer from hunger. Or are they morelike the politics, which understate the fact, that no one is left alone.

Oh it’s completely fucked up and leads to a lot of hurt for a lot of people. We do have unions they’re just very powerless. I don’t really understand the details but I know that they’re very weak.

With things like not having enough food/shelter, it is a real problem. I have enough people in my life that means it will never happen to me, but it’s terrible for some people. I know this is a privileged position to be in

In Finland we are so used to having unions that it sounds unreal next to that. Not everyone are part of the unions, but enough (like me) that they can make a change.

What? You didn’t hurt me! I agree with you that unions are important. I don’t agree with Georgia’s policies at all

I work at a college and we just avoided a strike for the academic staff (they literally were 2 hours from the strike deadline). I’m support staff so I would have had to cross the picket line.

It’s the first time that I’ve been unionized and our contract is up for negotiation next month so who knows.

I think you get paid when on strike here, not sure if it’s the same amount but that’s part of what you pay union dues for.

Strikes happen here (Canada), we had the wine shop strike a while back which is owned by the Ontario teacher pension plan.
 
I would have thought Canada is a good country to live in. I thought you lived id the States. In Canada you have a right to be a part of a Union, right?
 
I'm not sure I have the energy to read or respond to all this about Finnish nursing strikes.
