New single Too Much Music out now. Fair to say that I like the sound of the track more than the actual song:



However, the album features Kylie and JANE FONDA(!). Quite interestingly he draws parallels between the second half of the album and the back end of Night Work, which was peak SS.

The piece mentions he 'caught up' with Ana last summer... has there been a thawing there?!
 
What’s the story with the SS? Why did they split / stop making music?
 
Also I really want to like his music but he always sounds more like a parody of disco than a pastiche. It’s like he’s taking the piss.

Couldn’t stand the sight or stanking pong of each other. Also the general public decided they hated them :disco:

I think the official line is that they regarded Let’s Have A Kiki as the pinnacle of SS achievement and there was nowhere to go after that. NO COMMENT :)
 
Despised his first album, the new song is an improvement but still not great

I think I read (from someone here who claimed to have gotten to know them quite well) that Jake went off the rails and had a massive falling out with Ana and the rest of the group.

Mixture of deciding they didn't have much more to say after Let's Have A Kiki and Jake being an utter cock and nightmare to go on tour with.
 
The debut and Night Work are incredibly important, landmark albums in my life and I'll always have time for anything they do, but this has reminded me I didn't really give his first album that much of a proper go. Should probably get round to that again before this one

Hope they can patch things up enough for one last fifth and final album to consummate that record deal at some point. Ana can't have much on now Michelle Visage has summarily cuckooed her at the BBC :basil:

I'd have thought that before, but then not many artists tend to do GHs these days in the Spotify age, and it would essentially just be the singles off the two albums that everyone bought anyway plus Only The Horses, Fire With Fire, Any Which Way, Let's Have A Kiki and 2-3 new tracks. I suppose they did always sell to an audience that typically buys physicals though, so maybe 🤷‍♂️

But now it’s gone full circle, artists having a GH sort of formalises their main back catalogue into one playlist that can chart more easily, like The Weekend is doing now (I feel like The Weekend misses out a letter but I don’t know or care where)
 
I see he still hasn't managed to find a tune then. The production on the track is good until he starts mugging over it as per usual.

I bet he is unbearable when he's around at Elton's. Feet on the sofa, raiding the fridge for snacks, and rifling through the feather boa drawer uninvited. I bet David pretends he's not in whenever he rings the doorbell.

I think the last two singles are an improvement on Too Much Music. He's very much a supporting player on Devil Came Down the Dance Floor:



I'm hopeful for the album, though the singles suggest it might be a bit more Jake does Disco the Musical than Night Work pt II.
 
I find it all a bit Shapeshifters circa 2004, in a way that if it WAS 2004 I would probably like this, but it just feels so out of whack with what I listen to these days.
 
He's headlining our Pride.

At least we'll be able to get home for Match Of The Day.
 
I listened to him on Table Manners this week. He spends part of the year living near Brick Lane. He gets overwhelmed when he's had a big night out and has to face the people in Brick Lane.
 
I've only given the Kylie duet a spin so far, but it's a winner. Nice and moody in a low key kind of way.


I can only bear him in small doses though, so the rest will have to wait.
 
LOVE Voices. Nice bit of moody electro, Kylie sounds fantastic and you can't go wrong with an 'A-HA!'

Other than Voices, Radio Eyes (with Jane Fonda on the intro) is the other standout. It is the one that gives me Night Work vibes too. Very solid album overall, Too Much Music might be my least favourite thing here:

 
I was trying to find the discussion of Voices (which remains fucking outstanding), but I guess it is buried in the Padam thread.

I listened to the Track by Track podcast with Jake today and he said that Voices was originally recorded for the Oliver album (pre-Golden) but rejected for being TOO GAY. Jake then kept it and eventually wrote this album around it. Kylie was apparently not especially excited by the song.

I Used To Be In Love was one of a number of songs submitted for Disco and apparently got close.

Oliver album?

They worked on a track called Singing In My Sleep (among countless others - he claims he has at least an album's worth of material they have recorded together) and the suggestion was that it was a very early version of Voices. But that was recorded years ago - before Kiss Me Once, I think.

It sounds like he was working on the track with Oliver and Kylie was in LA at the same time so he called her to come in.
 
The Oliver album is FABULOUS

I think my favourite nu disco album of the whole revival
