Joanne Rowling and other TERFs

While I agree that the term 'fascist' is thrown around like CONFETTI these days, it's worth pointing out that Miriam doesn't call JK Rowling a fascist in the interview, her actual quote is "You can't be fascist about it" referring to "if you want to become a woman you should be allowed to"... meaning you shouldn't dictate or impose to others what they should or should not be, hence the 'fascist' link.

I do wish Rowling would stop trying to speak on behalf of gay people. The whole argument reveals that she knows absolutely nothing about what it means to be gay, or to be trans.

Being gay is SO MUCH EASIER than being trans in today's society, because of both understanding and acceptance. And of course, the fact that you don't have to potentially spend stupid amounts of your own money on hormones and surgery, or countless hours of your life trying to prove to doctors who know about as much as JK that you're trans enough.

Rowling and her like talk about it like it's a fucking CAKEWALK.

This pisses me off as well. My dad, whose politics are actually ALRIGHT, has lectured me about how GRA reform was going "too far, too fast" and it takes time to win people over. While I recognise that this is true, it makes me furious that human rights should be a matter of public opinion. Many gay people's lives have passed them by waiting for the BIGOTED MASSES to come around.

I think a better solution is to suggest that opinion forums such as twitter have a requirement for you to put your real name and basic info. Imagine how fewer trolls we would get if people were actually held accountable for their words.

As much as this makes sense, I am totally against this for various reasons. It would completely ruin any right employees have to an online life outside of "safe for work" mode for a start.

i was debating someone on fb this morning who wanted to sterilize trans people.

idk how i feel about calling J.K "trans women don't have periods" Rowling AND this morning's "sterilize these human degenerates!!" both nazi cunts haha.
 
The backlash towards trans people seems to just be getting worse and worse in the UK and it has been making me feel really depressed. I feel like JK Rowling has not just empowered the small but vocal group of TERFs who dedicate themselves to make trans people’s lives miserable but also normalised transphobic beliefs more broadly - as evidenced by the flood of support for Labour MP Rosie Duffield after her own transphobic sentiments.

I made this though which I hope is helpful for allies.


I have wasted FAR too much time trying to explain that there is no evidence of trans women (or even cis men pretending to be trans woman!) assaulting women and girls in public toilets when really old Tanya Terf is literally just experiencing the same pit-of-the-stomach revulsion as Harry Homophobe when he sees two blokes kissing.

The thing that angers me the most is that they accuse trans people and their allies being more concerned with feelings than facts. But in all honesty, I think it is quite understandable when talking about your own human rights that you might get a bit emotional, especially when the public at large seem to act as though the existence of trans people is fair game for a spot of debating football.

Every time she makes a statement she opens with the same 'since I opened my gob about this, I've had countless messages of support', like that wouldn't literally be the case if somebody with her platform tweeted about her deep seated admiration for Adolf Hitler.

She's beyond help, that much is clear. We should just stop giving her the oxygen of publicity at this point.
 
I don't follow this much on Twitter at this point, but I notice a person replying to Paris Lees' tweet mentions that they've noticed the TERFs less online since Linehan was banned and Reddit axed the main 'gender critical' subreddit. There's probably some confirmation bias/bubble stuff happening there, but it's a nice thought...

It's depressing, though it's all been downhill since she went back on Ron and Hermione's relationship and said she wished she'd paired Hermione with Harry.

It might trivialise things but it is sad to revisit the books and engage with a character like Luna Lovegood who is so confident in being different and doesn't judge others despite being misunderstood and bullied. All of the lead characters are outcasts in one way or other, and the stories are so inspiring for children who are different, and yet now new generations are likely to read the books, fall in love and then get to the point where they research the author and discover all of the hatred she's spouted.

Sad.

She really has gone against everything we liked her for. The most disappointing fall from grace in recent years.

Unfortunately I still have the books on my shelves and I don't want to bin them but my local charity shops are all still closed. I just don't want them in my house.

I've never owned any of the books, or the DVDs, although I did see the first three or four at the cinema.

I have told Mr L I'm boycotting the episode of Strike he has in the memory though, so I feel as though I'm doing my bit.
 
I don't have any Harry Potter stuff, but last year I threw some IT Crowd DVDs in the bin and it felt quite nice :tongueout:
 
I mean I bought them used ANYWAY, but I didn't want to look at them any more.
 
I'll keep my books and try to distinguish her from her work. I know everyone says they grew up with Harry Potter but they are unquestionably the defining piece of pop culture for me from 8 to 18.

And who knows, maybe she'll reread what she's come out with and see sense one day.
