I think if you lead quite a conventional, provincial life surrounded by conventional, provincial people who are all like "I don't have a problem with YOU but why do all the other [INSERT MINORITY GROUP HERE] need to RUB IT IN OUR FACES?" it's very easy to go, "Yeah! I'm not like them, and they're making ME look BAD."
 
The trans porn star Buck Angel is also quite famously a TERF supporter - I think his whole thing is that he identifies as "transsexual not transgender", or something.

I don't think it's that different to a lot of gay men hating Peter Tatchell in the 80s and 90s, and I think to a lesser extent, ever since for some. They had (relatively) comfortable lives where they were, or at least thought they were accepted, but in reality at best tolerated.

In my experience, quite easily. There is a distinct cohort of people who accept that they are gay/trans but just aren’t happy about it. They behave in people-pleasing ways around cis/straight people because they are ashamed of who they are. This frequently includes othering themselves from the rest of the community to try and gain the respect of those people and acceptance that you’re “not like the rest.”

Couple of examples: there is a trans woman on TikTok who isn’t hardcore like this but often says things to distance herself from the rest of the community. She made a video essentially saying that it is totally understandable and fine that cis women don’t want trans women who don’t totally “pass” in their toilets. She also talks about how she understands she is a “biologically a man” a fair bit. This might not sound too bad but the comments are FULL of cis people saying “You’re so reasonable - I wish more trans people were like you.” It’s a shame because a lot of her videos are otherwise lovely and she has a very accepting partner, etc.

In terms of gays, a partner of an old friend of mine comes to mind. No idea if they are still together (I lost touch with the friend) but I remember the first time I met him in a pub he was complaining about pride parades and saying they were unnecessary. All while being in a years-long relationship that he was hiding from his parents. You’re the reason Pride is still needed, sunshine!

I've said it before, I'll say it again- whatever your beliefs, I fail to see how someone else LIVING THEIR LIFE IN THE WAY THEY WANT TO WITHOUT HURTING ANYONE makes ANY FUCKING DIFFERENCE TO YOURS.

People should be able to live their own lives and be openly queer and militant OF COURSE but there isn't just ONE way of BEING GAY or BEING TRANS and thinking other people may not be comfortable with you is an OPINION or wanting to keep it hidden from your family/friends/work colleagues is a CHOICE (not mine either of them but regardless), but I wouldn't judge. I can't speak for being trans but certainly in my experience of being gay there are as many variants as STARS IN THE SKY. I'm very happy Pride exists for people who find strength/joy in its celebration but I have personally never felt 100% comfortable in it (and I've been to MANY), so I can imagine (in fact I know) people who are horrified at the thought of it, and saying it's INTERNALISED HOMOPHOBIA is in my opinion a bit REDUCTIVE.

At the end of the day I want sexual liberation FOR ALL, not just for the people who agree with how I live MY live.

I remember a local news piece during the Labour conference which was very "bwave Wosie is too scawed to go to conference because of the MEANIES". They acknowledged it was over her stance on trans rights but went in to absolutely NO depth about it to the extent that the person I was watching with afterwards asked if she was pro or anti trans rights.

She seems quite unpopular, but I think she'll win the seat and anyone challenging her from the left will be painted as VILE BULLIES.

I just don't get what she achieves with this. There are loads of non- biological (ugh- is that the right term? I DON'T KNOW) mothers out there in the form of adoptive parents and there are many who don't conform to either a "Mother" or "Father" role in same- sex couples, or otherwise for that matter. And the topic isn't ANYTHING to do with trans rights etc. so I don't understand what the issue is?

I realise I'm preaching to the choir here, but STILL...WHAT A CROCK OF HORSESHIT!
 
How one can like anything from Nigel Farage is a mystery to me.

The comments below this video are just horrific. We are so so so seriously outnumbered by the cunts on this issue, it's really heartbreaking. :( And they feel so emboldened and empowered to say it too - if they said homophobic or racist things on social media they would be banned, at least temporarily, but with transphobia, it's just seen as fair game by so many people.

Have you ever seen a TERF protest versus the counter protests? We’re really not outnumbered at all. It’s just a small, incredibly vocal group of freaks, cranks and shut-ins who need to get a fucking life.
 
Doesn’t polling show that the majority of Brits are just apathetic and don’t really care? Hardly great either, but the hardcore TERFs are definitely not the majority.
 
My concern is that the ones who are apathetic for the most part are more easily swayed by TERFS and their rhetoric.

I really disagree with this. The number of people at the protests on BOTH sides is small compared to the population so you can't use those figures as your benchmark. Most people stay at home so social media is actually a better measure - it also allows people to say what they 'really think' sometimes anonymously. Every single post/tweet I see about trans people ends up with a larger proportion of negative comments than positive, even when posted by liberal platforms.

I never said that the 'hardcore TERFs are the majority' and I don't believe most of the comments under that video are hardcore TERFs. They are ordinary people who feel horrified at the sight of a trans woman calling herself a mother.

As people have said, a large proportion of British society are apathetic and do not really care about trans people or trans rights UNLESS it's put in their face like that video - when they automatically either laugh or feel horrified by the idea. I really do believe that that is the majority of the population, just like the majority of the population would have turned their nose up about gay pride marchs in the 1970s/80s.
