Kalavision Song Contest - Semi Final 2 Voting Closes Thu 16/07

Weirdly I just heard that Stromae song over the weekend for the first time, independently of this.

I had previously had NO idea just how reductive Twin Twin’s Moustache was.

So basically it was me who voted? Even when I can't be arsed with more song contests in the summertime, I won't complain if I don't qualify. :)

Do we get results on Friday Kala dear?

I have my TOP FIVE so just need to find five other songs to throw some points at.

Yes what’s the chat with results?

Are we getting the semi one results at the same time?

@Ag throwing a bunch of random votes together in less than 5 minutes to get this SHIT over with.

And @Rita will still manage to make it faster, because why is she gonna bother listening to the songs in a song contest when she can give random points based on the first 3 seconds of each song? Total sense.

And that’s why we love her :disco:

I think I'm gonna go Rita in the final and do random votes too :disco: I'm gonna write down the countries in a paper and throw darts. In the unfortunate case Suomi qualifies and I hit Argentina, I'll keep throwing until I get another country :)

J’ai voté!

Apart from a rather clear top 3, this was a struggle. The best songs of the semi are still a 6 or 7 at best.

And I did think Syria sounded a bit familiar, hearing it now, the melody is from a famous 90’s Syrian tv series. Or at least it sounds a lot like it.

I voted too fast and used the Rita 3 second method. My true 12 was given probably half, but I'm sure it will do well as enough discerning trash pop scholars have put their work in for it anyway.

Are the results tonight?

Almost finished listening to everything and we were really spoilt with the gems in semi 1, huh? :(

I think by this point last week, Kala had already told us every song had received points. From his silence this week, I’m guessing that’s not the case here :D

That's good news, I was afraid that a few people may need to be sectioned after voting for Russia

01 BELGIUM - STROMAE - Papaoutai - I think this is probably the best song in the competition however I don’t know if I can give it any points because of how well known it is?

02 CANADA - TRANS X - Vivre sûr video - love this, what a find!

03 CZECH REPUBLIC - LUCIE VONDRÁČKOVÁ - Zombie - I really enjoyed this

04 SPAIN - FANGORIA - Fiesta en el infierno - I like it but not in love with it as some of you may well be

05 RUSSIA - GOGOL BORDELLO - Mishto! - I found this difficult to be honest with you, but I am willing to try again

06 GERMANY - BLÜMCHEN - Boomerang - I found this tiring to be honest with you. I did enjoy the Blümchen masterpiece Heute est Mein Tag from back in the day though.

07 ÅLAND ISLANDS - CHISU - Polaris - good but hasn’t stuck

08 ANDORRA - LAS BISTECS - Universio - this feels like a lot. Too much? I don’t know.

09 LATVIA - BERMUDU DIVSTŪRIS - #Sarkanbaltsarkanais - this is another good find.

10 SYRIA - MAYADA BASSELLIS - YA Mahla Alfosha - I don’t like this but I appreciate it for what it is

11 TAIWAN - PERFUME - Future Pop - production wise this is a joy, and has grown with every listen. That’s right, unlike some of you so-called music fans, I have listened to these tracks multiple times.

12 SENEGAL - MC SOLAAR - Sonotone - I do like MC Solaar - remember La Belle est le Badboy in Sex and the City? La Vie Est Belle is his standout track for me.

13 NORTH MACEDONIA - CYRILLIC - Sevda - a low-key banger that has potential

14 BRAZIL - MAJOR LAZER FEAT. ANITTA AND PABLLO VITTAR- Sua Cara - I found this tricky.

15 MONACO - CLAUDIA PHILLIPS - Quel Souci La Boétie!... - oh! artpop. I would love to hear this in a club - are they chanting about Instagram at the end? This is REFRESHING in what is a stormy sea of a second half.

16 NORTH KOREA - DECO*27 FEAT. HATSUNE MIKU - Ghost Rule - I don’t hate this, I actually enjoy the video game narrative

17 ARGENTINA - RUTH LORENZO - Miedo - probably one of the weakest Ruth songs I’ve heard - i loved her first album :(

18 ITALY - PAOLA IEZZI - Lovenight - Solid. Italy are good at music.

19 VENEZUELA - ALAYA - Sola Solita - again, these closers always feel like afterthoughts alas. I think a great big ballad should close a semi personally :ken:

Belgium - ten years ago I hated 'Alors on Danse' and was thankful it didn't massively blow-up in the UK so I was never inclined to check him out beyond that song. This is thankfully a fair bit better!
Canada - the tune is rather catchy, for a song clocking in at over 6 minutes I'm surprised I'm not hating on it
Czech Republic - I'm digging this one, better than most of what's on offer in a Czech ESC selection
Spain - this woman and the Finnish guy from the first semi would make a fabulous pairing. I can't be sure whether I like it, but I sure as hell won't forget it
Russia - very funny Kala. Did you include this as a joke to ensure even numbers in the semi-finals. I don't believe anyone would send something this awful. Almost seven minutes of my life I'll never get back. HOW DARE YOU.
Germany - the hook is catchy and fun but the beat when she's not singing is a bit annoying at times. I appreciate it as an entry but it's not as essential as the likes of Rigga-Digga-Ding-Dong or Gilead
Aland Islands - quite haunting, I first listened to this one on Monday at around the time when Naya's body was confirmed to be found and I felt like the song fit the sad mood that the news put me in
Andorra - there are some really annoying sounds during this song which make it a not overly pleasant listen
Latvia - a boyband, exciting! Sadly it's not entirely up my alley, sounds a bit too 'straight music', a bit too much arrogance radidating from them. Basically, not twinky enough.
Syria - entries that are older than me are always going to have an uphill struggle with the Jacques jury, sorry
Taiwan - this is a welcome slice of JOY after the past few entries
Senegal - rap isn't really my thing/favourite genre but an okay filler entry that is neither a highlight or a lowlight
North Macedonia - not very exciting and not leaving much of an impression at all
Brazil - it's not quite 'Lean On' or 'Cold Water' levels but a moderately fun jam, I can see it being a grower
Monaco - this is doing nothing to change how TIRED I am of this semi-final
North Korea - oh North Korea, I knew there was a reason I was excited for you! A spark that was really needed
Argentina - I'll always have time for Ruth, what with her being a Eurovision legend. This could've been four minutes of her burping and it would be in the upper tier of this semi-final
Italy - this is very nice if a bit overshadowed by the beast of a song that San Marino entered
Venezuela - was hoping it would pop off a bit more but it's a woman with an upbeat modern pop song so I'll take it

Now that all the songs are out there and we have no teenagers in sight, I'd be very interested to know what people think I submitted this time!

I'm going to say you're trying to throw us off with your Russia comment and you actually have a thing for hairy old gypsies as well as gross twinks.

So. We still have LOADS not voted yet. Get a fucking move on people!

This semi is much tighter than semi 1 where the top 10 were clearly ahead. Thirteen (!) songs have received at least one DOUZE.

There’s about 5 songs clamouring for the final 2 spots in the final. But things can all change!

When are the results?

The North Korea song is literally an animated woman saying she’s garbage? Is it some sort of incel anthem that I was subjected to?
