The Kick Inside, 1978

"You crush the lily in my soul"

The start of a sequence of early Kate tracks now. This is where it all started: track 1 on album 1, kicking off with the sound of whales (for no discernible reason). Kate studied dance and mime under Lindsay Kemp (as did David Bowie) and this song was inspired by a performance she saw by him.

I feel like in anyone else's hands How To Be Invisible would kind of PLOD on a bit, but Kate manages to make it captivating, although the hook is good enough to carry the instrumental bits anyway imo. Love the backing "oooohs"
 
When I think of Kate, THESE are the vocals I think of. Probably because of Wuthering Heights
 
I really love her sound on the first album. I don't really know how to explain it but I want to use the word 'percussion'. It's just very distinct and soothing, like Britain in the 70s was actually a nice place to be and not just Thatcher and rolling blackouts.
 
I think it's easy to kind of forget Kate's early stuff, but fuck me you can't argue those melodies and those vocal rides :disco: And all the quirks were there right from the start
 
5. L'Amour Looks Something Like You
The Kick Inside, 1978

"You look like an angel, sleeping it off at the station"

Kate explores young love in some depth on The Kick Inside and this song recalls a (possibly drunken) tryst with a guy she really digs, man. He sounds sweet. I think they may have made the beast with two backs: she recalls "that feeling of sticky love inside". :gross:

Completely agree with that. I wanted it to be represented as it's so vital to her story, although I tend to overlook the first couple of albums generally given what comes later
 
6. Symphony In Blue
Lionheart, 1978

"The more I think about sex, the better it gets"

Kate has a bit of fun with colour and music metaphors. It's a pretty lighthearted song, although some of the lyrics are a bit darker than you'd think at first blush: "My terrible fear of dying no longer plays with me". In 2005, Kate was asked about this song in an interview. She said she remembered the song but couldn't remember what she was thinking about when she wrote it.
