9. The Wedding List
Never for Ever, 1980

"You've made a wake of our honeymoon and I'm coming for you!"

The character's husband-to-be, Rudy, is shot dead at their wedding. His widow vows to avenge the murderer, putting the murderer's death on the wedding list. After she kills him, she commits suicide - but as the Chorus of Kates gleefully informs us at the end, she was pregnant with Rudy's child. Her quest for vengeance gets in the way of hope in the form of the life she could have had with Rudy's child. Her agonising cry as she dies to join Rudy at the end of the song is :disco:

I should state for the record that Among Angels is a beautiful song, I just have to be in a particular state of mind to engage with it 👻

10. Delius (Song of Summer)
Never for Ever, 1980

"Ooh, he's a moody old man"

Kate's ode to the English composer Frederick Delius. When he became wheelchair-bound in old age, a young English admirer Eric Fenby (who is namechecked in the song) volunteered to be his assistant and take musical dictations.

The song really makes me think of long, hot summer weekends in the garden. And don't worry, the fly at the end is on the record, not in your house.

There's so much going on! What is that, a harp? I've no idea, I rarely do, it just all sounds fabulous :disco:

11. Sunset
Aerial, 2005

"Every sleepy light must say goodbye to the day before it dies"

From one song of summer to another. Kate's ode to a summer sunset. "Where sands sing in crimson, red and rust, then climb into bed and turn to dust."
