16. Violin
Never for Ever, 1980

"Whack that devil into my fiddlestick!"

Rather experimental, this is essentially Kate getting off to the shiver and quiver of a violin. Performed on The Tour of Life before it was released, it's a rather marmite track but you have to give her credit for trying something different, and in some ways it foreshadows her more experimental work on The Dreaming.

I've always liked it a lot! Didn't realise it was marmite but some people might think it errs on the side of "stupid". It totally doesn't though. It's genius!

I love it but some of her vocal here IS a bit close to stuff like the Pamela Stephenson parody, I have to admit :D

17. The Song of Solomon
The Red Shoes, 1993

"I'll do it for you, I'll be the Rose of Sharon for you
I'll do it for you, I'll be the Lily of the Valley for you"

Inspired by the romantic/sexually-charged Old Testament psalm of the same name (with some lines taken directly from the psalm), Kate takes on a Maid Marion-style role in this bittersweet love song. There's a sense of surrender in the "I'll do it for you..." middle 8 which I've always thought has this desperate, longing, evocative power to it. One of my personal favourites.

And shout out to @COB in his negligé!

And I'll do it for you
I'll be the Rose of Sharon for you
I'll do it for you
I'll be the Lily of the Valley for you
I'll do it for you
I'll be Isolde or Marion for you
I'll do it for you
Ooh I'll come in a hurricane for you
I'll do it for you

Actual ART :disco:

18. You're The One
The Red Shoes, 1993

"He is very good-looking
The only trouble is he's not you"

In 1992, Kate lost her mother and broke up with her long-term partner (and sound engineer), Del Palmer. You're The One is how Kate does a breakup song, and it's devastating. Incredibly, Del was the sound engineer on the track - awkward. The way her vocals dip from sweet and sad to frustrated and downright angry is a highlight.

My favourite heartbreak song OF. ALL. TIME. (Maybe).

It's a true rollercoaster of emotions. It's perfect. It's not soppy, it's not woeful. Just honest.

I love The Red Shoes so much more these days. So many gems and it feels more cohesive than The Sensual World, musically it all gels

I think that The Red Shoes is the Kate album I'm going to listen to first
I feel like it's quite underrated honestly! Some people feel that the production on some songs is a bit dated these days, but it's a lovely collection of songs.

Yeah it IS a bit dated, but the songwriting is still really good on most of it. Suggest you listen to the 2018 remaster that's on Spotify @RJN as it's a bit less tinny

I don't think I find dated production to be a problem at all. The songs from it today are the ones that are hitting me the most, and they do seem very lovely
