Katy Perry - Smile (5th Studio Album)

I mean, really, @Jark I'ma letchufinish and all - but to try and claim that Smile is some kind of opaque Tori Amos/PJ Harvey/Bjork type cornucopia of lyrical metaphors dressed in sunshine & bubbles & sparkles is frankly ludicrous.
 
Between rows of Spandex at Forever 21, in the back of a cab coming home from the bar, after losing your headphones at the gym—in a pandemic, all the ideal templates for listening to Katy Perry have disappeared. No more can the pop star’s songs seep into the background of a normal social life, clunking around in your head before you even know their titles; you have to actively opt into her new album and launch yourself willingly into its suffocating glitz. Smile is meant to be a “picture of RESILIENCE & GRATITUDE,” Perry writes in the liner notes. Those capital letters—the sense that someone is shouting at you—come through in the music. “Yeah, I’m thankful/Scratch that, baby, I’m graaateful,” she croons in the title song. “I am resilient!” she belts on another, six times in two minutes. “It’s not the end of the world!” she promises over a flailing disco beat, before launching into a pseudo-rap about a fortune teller and “flipping off the flop,” whatever that means.

I'm more annoyed that pop music fans on a pop music forum are incapable of having any kind of reasoned discussion about the merits of the album and are instead making cheap jokes for easy likes than I am that some jaded critic with a stick up his ass thinks it's no good (given that with his opening paragraph he reveals he has never understood Katy Perry anyway and embarrassingly relegates her music to the shopping mall sound system)

You know what, I like her and find her immensely creative. Sometimes I think her output doesn't match her vision which seems manic & larger than life truth be told.

My fave perf was when she was as big as a house and her water was about to break and she was running around through tinsel screeching about daisies.

that is just lovely. I really appreciate the visuals and how every one is completely different in concept and execution but tells a cute little story.

she looks AMAZING in the Champagne Problems video (and also the twin of Emily Blunt)
 
This is looking to fall from top 10 to the 80s on it's second week in the USA :bruised: / :(

As a pop fan I'm genuinely fascinated by this campaign. It's going to be one that's picked over for years to come.
She really put the promotional work in too (and whilst pregnant).
 
I hope she's not already having to dip in to Daisy! Daisy!! Daisy!!! college fund :(
 
I don't think her current level of success is surprising really.

She was huge with 'Teenage Dream' and had some big hits since, but she's never really felt like the kind of artist whose hits were totally tied in to their own star persona, and I don't think she's connected with a loyal fanbase in the same way as some of her peers for that reason, so she's more dependent on all the stars aligning for her.

Tucked, Cry About It Later, Teary Eyes, Only Love are all wonderful. She has more essential albums - well, the debut and Prism at least - but if you like Katy Perry's brand of pop it's hardly as if she's LOST IT. She's doing more or less what she's always done with this album, and doing it pretty well.
 
I mean, I never stanned, but I can't deny the singles from Teenage Dream

Nothing from this album (even Never Really Over) comes close
 
nothing on Chromatica comes close to Born This Way or Alejandro, which doesn't seem to have prevented you from stanning and gagging

I have to cancel.

Babylon, Free Woman, Rain On Me, Stupid Love, etc. are all up there with Gags's best.

Just writing the titles leaves me stanning, gagging, shaking, crying, and so on.

I guess Katy's just... not for me. There's room for everyone on the Billboard charts... I guess!
 
Alejandro is arguably THE pop song of the decade. by anyone. I can't believe this homophobic slander. on my Moopy!
