Katy Perry - Smile (5th Studio Album)

first listen review!

11 Never Really Over - immaculate.
07 Cry About It Later - the verses are intriguing, the chorus falls flat.
08 Teary Eyes - a bop... ok it's getting repetitive.. if this is Smile's Walking On Air then i have to unstan. oh wait, the outro's keeeep onnn danciiiiiing are marvelous! why are they there for 3 seconds?
07 Daisies - i like how it sounds right after Teary Eyes, wonderful placement. do i stan it though? no.
05 Resilient - the lack of growth in her songwriting is shocking.
05 Not The End of The World - chile, what is this?
08 Smile - i'm hating the album so much that Smile is sounding lovely.
05 Champagne Problems - i-
04 Tucked - we-
08 Harleys in Hawaii - they should have waited and released this in better timing. it's one of her maturest sounding tracks. yes, even with the oola oola, jula jula bits.
05 Only Love - it's literally been 84 years since i started listening to this garbage.
07 What Makes A Woman - this has grown on me.

unrelease it.

66 Smile
84 Witness
88 Prism
85 Teenage Dream
78 One of The Boys

a 66 is not even worthy of release? :D

My thoughts on first listen are that it's a pleasant album, and she's toned down some of her more grating tendencies on this one, but beyond NRO and HIH, it's not very memorable, and the last song is a bit cringe.

i just noticed the 'Steam - Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye' sample on Not The End of The World and-

01 (-4) Not The End of The World

why am i WILLINGLY putting myself through this torture of an album?

Some of the reviews are soooo scathing
"It’s a “Live, Laugh, Love” cushion, it’s a faux-inspirational quote over a stock image of a sunset, it makes “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” seem like a deep philosophical rumination on the transient nature of existence. In short, it’s no substance, and not even that much style."

:D

:D

the KatyCats are NOT having it. here's one of their comments below Entertainment Weekly's review - which was actually the most positive review the album has received.

I'm sorry but this seems like a very unprofessional review. There was no need to compare Perry to other artists like Ariana Grande & Lady Gaga, because how is that relevant in a review about Katy Perry? Looking through your previous reviews, I've noticed you have a unnecessary hatred in your heart for Katy Perry, and this is not a healthy way to live life. Also your Twitter profile includes some very unprofessional tweets that could affect your placement as a writer for EW. If you do not rewrite this review by making it more professional or just take it down instead, I will be forced to take legal action against your party for libel & misleading information.

:D

Can someone send Nonnas Dangerous a link to this thread

:zsazsa:

the bonus track High On Your Supply is quite a bop - should have made the tracklist

Smile debuted with 7.8m Spotify streams.

for the sake of comparison:

80m folklore - Taylor Swift
67m thank u, next - Ariana Grande
54m Lover - Taylor Swift
48m Chromatica - Lady Gaga
29m Future Nostaliga - Dua Lipa
21m Manic - Halsey

And nowhere to be found on the gobal charts either Spotify or Apple

She did such a poor job growing with her fans. Did she really think that 16 year olds still wanna listen to MOR garbage?

Oh wow, I kind of feel bad for her! :bruised:

At least most people don’t even seem to have realised it’s even been released! :D

She did such a poor job growing with her fans.

this is the main issue, innit?

Smile could have been released in 2013 and been a top 5 hit. Gen Z is simply not swallowing her childish shtick and the millennials got tired the moment she decided to release Birthday instead of Ghost. it marked the death of her musical and artistic growth.

having a dark and mature reputation-esque "comeback" in 2015-2016 might have offered far less embarrassing diminishing returns, but she decided to continue clowning to this very day. and don't get me started on her SNL performances. the nail in the coffin.

it's been very hard to muster any excitement for whatever this woman releases  I haven't even streamed out of curiosity, might do that in a couple of weeks, who knows? it's been all about Dua, Disclosure and the Mariah EP's. I mean, I'm more excited for MENLY who at least has changed her sound and made me put attention to her again, but then again I've crap taste.

I wonder what gives? Poor Katy (ps. The Thin White Duke Remix of Part Of Me played this morning and it still slaps, give us some more of that KATHERINE.

I think she's just really bad without the 'machine' behind her. She doesn't seem to have the creative vision or musical chops to thrive on her own. Like, of all the things to draw inspiration from, she went for CLOWNS? She probably thought she had a clever 'metaphor' going, but it's unoriginal and juvenile.

But ultimatley she'll probably still be an A-Lister for ages. She's pretty, white, inoffensive and has collected enough memorable hits to sustain a career that most can still only dream of.

Also, CLOSE YOUR BRACKETS HUN.

Well. All of us except Jark knew this is how it was going to end. I haven’t listened to the album yet.

I wonder if she’s just like that, the doofy wet-eyed clown always seems to be in the mix somewhere.

If this is the sort of music she wants to make coming out of some sort of depression, then all power to her, I don’t think she owes anything.
