AGOG at this only having a mere 318 million views



Anyway - what do you make of this utter classic?
 
Inspired by the Stereogum US number ones series reaching it. And frankly, his review of just laughing at how good it was the first time he heard it feels on the mark to me - what a WORLD WONDER of POP
 
a good pop song with a classic melody, but I really rarely feel the need to hear it. 8 feels fair. four Teenage Dream singles have bigger spotify streams than it does, which I find quite surprising. Last Friday Night is way more up my alley.

2. Teenage Dream (10/10)

3. California Gurls (8/10)
4. Last Friday Night (6/10)
5. E.T. (5/10)
6. Part of Me (5/10)
7. Wide Awake (3/10)

I like the first 4, but only The One That Got Away and Teenage Dream are the ones that make me feel something

this write-up is possibly better than the song itself :D quite an emotional read somehow... Katheryn's power.
 
Tom Ewing will always be one of my favourite writers, but he's utterly outdone by the sheer productivity of Breihan without much sacrifice on writing quality (though admittedly, it probably helps that Breihan is paid to do it full time)

I think I even enjoy the ones about songs I don't care about more a lot of the time! The piece for D4L - Laffy Taffy was really good at nailing down just how much the pop of each era tends to be shaped by the dominant consumer tech of the time.
 
I'm pleased to say that, a decade on, I've just about emerged from the dark period where I found the HOMOSEXUALS IN BLAZERS Glee cover to be the definitive version

I'd not quite clocked before that all those songs were on the same record. Teenage Dream (the album) and a Katy Perry Greatest Hits would basically be the SAME THING

(not that I'd really want to listen to it)
 
I would be willing to tolerate ‘Roar’ on a Katy Perry Greatest Hits.

I’ve now paid to become a member of stereogum for his new series on the number ones on the alternative chart. The first one was Peek-a-boo by Siouxsie and the Banshees and was a good read too

why do you (and so many people) think so? :D it's insanely hooky, full of Katy-isms, one of her best songs live... it hasn't aged a day for me
 
It's literally a chain of clichés! And I rarely care much about lyrics, so at the point things have been taken so far I'm grated...

That’s the whole point. One crashing cliche is and insult to songwriting, but when you have SO MANY it’s clearly a deliberate vibe and you should just turn your brain off and enjoy it,
