I also want to do Rainbow having given it another chance this week and thoroughly enjoyed. but let's first revisit Kesha's second album, which is chock full of massive bangers and rode the coattails of the EDM as electropop era she herself helped usher in with her debut :disco:

tonight 8pm!

@POP! @RJN @Tisch @Iguana @Gangsta Nancy Lam @Pipo @jivafox @joanne @Suedey @Beverley and all who wish to apply glitter cum to their faces!

Are you implying that those who you tagged don’t wish to apply glitter cum to our faces?

I'm afraid I won't be able to sync until 10-ish your time! But I love this album (sort of)

I could push it but the problem is that 10 UK is 11 EU and I need an early ish night

hopefully you can contribute thoughts later though!

the bonus tracks on this album were spectacular. Past Lives is... well. I'll save the hyperbole for tonight :eyes:

I don't think I ever played the subsequent two albums in full - are they ANY GOOD?

Rainbow is really well produced and sonically feels like an organic evolution of her OG sound - a bit less trashy, a few more real instruments, some more diverse rock influences etc. and also a lot of fun. It's got some filler but QUITE GOOD and we should revisit for sure

the last one was garbage :D

Other than DIE YOUNG I remember being utterly repulsed by this album so maybe I should give it another listen or maybe I’ll STAY AWAY.

I can’t join but I just listened and it’s great :disco: I probably haven’t heard it since 2013 but it’s really held up. I’ll rate later

Die Young, on the other hand, is a hard 9. these beats feel TERRIBLY of their time but something about her vocal over them is very comforting. and this song has ludicrously catchy melodies at every turn.

didn't it get pulled from radio just as it was getting big due to some massacre in the states? :(

I don't think I ever wanna hear that :D

these are the songs not produced by Dr Puke that it's fully OK to love, btw:

All That Matters (The Beautiful Life)
Love Into the Light
Out Alive
Past Lives

luckily they're all amaze.

C'Mon is pure Kesha on autopilot but it's good fun.

I know I said I wouldn't talk about you publicly, but
that was before I caught you lying and cheating on me, slut

VERY into the casual usual of slut here :disco:

my choice has always been

Feeling like a saber-tooth tiger sipping on a warm Budweiser
Touch me and gimme that rush, better pack a toothbrush, gonna pull an all-nighter

I have no memory of C'Mon being the second single :D should've been Crazy Kids!

Thinking of You - what a tune. explosive chorus, catchy, nice chilled out change of pace vs. the uptempos. it sounds like such a SMASH.

Crazy Kids is such an all out BANGER. it's all about that build and the DROP which I should hate but which honestly slaps life into my bussy. did this flop?!

I said it in other syncs and I'll say it again, Will.I.Am is awful, I know eventually Dr. Luke executive produced the whole album and Crazy Kids ended up having his trademark all over but I'm guessing the original song was awful as.

06 Crazy Kids

I think one of the things I like a lot about Kesha 1.0 and this album in particular is that despite going in hard on a lot of very conventional top 40 pop characteristics - drops, EDM production, chopped vocals, repetitive hooks - her voice somehow rises above the processing and gives everything a lot of character and warmth. she always sounds like she's having a ball, it's very infectious.

I had totally forgotten Wherever You Are but it makes a good argument for what I just said. super generic but bitch sounds great!

maybe there were like 5 better songs here? Crazy :eyes: how this ended up having THREE different remixes: one with Pitbull, one will Will.I.Ama and finally one with Juicy J. :D

not sure anybody called for Iggy Pop rhyming garbage can with Afghanistan here tbh.

I bet she had to fight to get Wonderland on the album. it's very "template for where she really wanted to be going as an artist" (just like how all the best tracks here are the bonuses). I really like it, if anything I'd like it to lean into the country production a bit more.

Every song that sounds unlike the rest of the album she did have to fight for it, according to the documentary series she had on MTV ages ago.

08 Wonderland

This was written with a member of the Black Keys.
