On September 2, Universal will release an expanded double CD of Kim Wilde's sixth album 'Close' from 1988. The track listing has been kept secret... until now. The CD will feature two previously unreleased tracks and eight tracks that were never released on CD in the UK (see tracklisting below). You can preorder this double CD now.

Despite the fact that nobody in their right mind needs SIX remixes of 'Hey Mister Heartache', I am very much looking forward to this.

Oh FABULOUS! I have the other 5 reissues from Cherry Pop it will be great to have the B-sides in decent quality. From memory, the only track missing from that list is the Extended Version of Four Letter Word, everything else looks like it's on there!

I wonder if we'll ever get reissues of Love Moves and Love Is...
 
Her music can be utterly spellbinding: sometimes I just cannot believe how underrated she is, and at times absolutely love it that way. Close was the moment the stark beauty of Catch As Catch Can caught up with PWL's propulsive Hi-NRG disco, some rather fine MOR ballads that cushioned the two main hits, and she even held her own against Roxette and Tiffany with the delicious bitterness of Never Trust A Stranger.

I was aware of her greatest hits back in the day, with If I Can't Have You and the re-release of Kids, but it wasn't until 1999 (when I was getting 1-3 albums per week) when I finally bought it, and only then discovered the swanky "feelin' too damned good about myself" anthem In My Life (those stuttered backing vocals sparking nostalgia for Rhythm of Love era Kylie, but it must have sounded incredibly dated even then). That was bizarrely enough for me until the news that she was releasing a proper studio album again with Come Out & Play, and then I just went berserk for her - every album showers you with treats (although Now & Forever is weak, it does have some fun remixes), and without sounding pretentious some of her music was actual art.

The gorgeous build up of Love's A No into something huge, the swanky exotica of European Soul and the synthesized Stone could all have been singles. You just can't fault it as an album. Love Moves was just sloppy by comparison and lacked the certain je-ne-sais-quoi that had embellished all her records until then: a decent album (Someday is stunning), but it was in the trail of Close getting it all so right. And to top it all off, she was a fucking bombshell at the time. She arguably reached her hard-boiled L.A Confidential-esque glamour peak for the Love Is campaign, but she was still the Kim Bassinger next door here.
 
I remember being devastated when Love In The Natural Way was released as the fifth single instead of Love's A No. I'm still not quite over it.
 
Praise the lords, I've been holding out for this for years. Stuff the remixes, it's the b-sides and a decent copy of the album I'm interested in! I daresay Love Is and Love Moves will follow eventually - both rather fine to these ears if truth be told.

I do think she's massively underrated despite being huge back in the day and love that she's still making music. At the very least we've got the Christmas album (and accompanying gig :disco:) to come but from the look of her tweets, it sounds like another album might be on its way too.

I'd love a return to the glitterin' West End stage too as she was rather corking in Tommy. Her take on "Smash The Mirror" brought my proverbial house down.

As much as I love "Love's A No", surely that was the right decision. "Love In The Natural Way" is just HUGE.
 
The tracklist has appeared on Amazon and is the same as the one VoR posted but they have added Four Letter Word (12" Version) :D

I think that's pretty much everything then! YAY!
 
"Hey Mister Heartache" really is the only dud on there. Why was it the first single? Was Junior such a name at the time? Obviously I should know having been there but I don't remember him ever registering much at all.
 
I actually do like Hey Mister Heartache, but not as a first single- though it was telling that they pretty much cut Junior out of the 7" version entirely!

Junior had a hit in 1982 with Mama Used To Say but was a nobody by 1987. Wikipedia says he is Richard Blackwood's uncle, strangely enough.
 
Well, Another Step (Closer To You) was a big hit for the two of them the previous year, maybe Hey Mister Heartache was an attempt to recapture the magic?

It's not a huge favourite of mine either, but it's alright. Certainly no YOU CAME. :disco:
 
He had ONE HIT and then you'd THINK he was going to be the BRITISH MICHAEL JACKSON or something

"Hey Mister Heartache" was a BLATANT attempt to recreate the success of "Another Step", yes, but that failed miserably, and he wasn't even a big part of the single version ANYWAY. I quite like it as it is, but yes, it shouldn't have been the first single considering what else was on the album, but it didn't seem to make much difference considering the size of the three hits that followed it...

Love the Shep remix, even if all it does is bask in how good it was already, but the adrenaline and energy packed into the beats before it gets going with all the tinkly synths, etc, is quite something.

I was there too. I always remember it being scorching hot though so it either a different day in the same run or I'm remember Blond Ambition :D

I had the 12" but can't remember the Shep mix much. If it was more of the same as the original, that's probably why.
 
I'm guessing a different day Christian. The only good thing was getting closer to the stage as not many wanted to get soaked. Michael came on later and we were practically near the front. Journey home was that good mind. :-(

I remember the choice was either this or Lovesexy at Wembley Arena. My best friend and I couldn't understand why anyone would want to go and see Prince over Jacko. How times came to change :D
 
Sadly YouTube doesn't have another of Kim's achievements during the Close period: presenting Glenn Medeiros with an 18th birthday cake on Top Of The Pops.

Kim & Ricky always had a marvellous ear for spectacular synths ("The Second Time" anyone?) but "Never Trust A Stranger" took them to another level.

Was Love is Holy ever out and out rejected by Belinda? All of the non-Wilde penned songs would have fitted nicely into Live Your Life Be Free, and then Belinda went off and did the Real album sans Mr Nowels. Heart Over Mind was from the same writers as Belinda's Valentine, Then Jerico's What Does It Take and a handful of Stevie Nicks songs.

I saw Kim twice in the run so Natalie must have been rattling around somewhere in the chorus. I think I met her backstage at Starlight Express when an ex of mine was in it though!
 
"Love Is" is a blatant attempt at moving in on the Belinda market...sadly just as Belinda herself vacated the charts :D

Is anyone going to Kim's Christmas Cracker concerts in December?
 
I'd love to go but all the venues are too far away for me - I'd have gone to Manchester at a push but Birmingham is too far for me. :(
 
I've always wanted to get into Kim but the magic isn't there for me, really. I think it's her voice that just doesn't do it for me. It's a shame, because I think I would love some of the songs in other hands. I just listened to 'Love Is Holy' and I would have loved Belinda on it.

She seems like an absolute HOOT too.

I think her voice could be the reason she's not that celebrated anymore too. It's just so ordinary and unremarkable.
 
When they used to do a vote thing for the new release of the week on the R1 Breakfast show, Simon Mayo introduced Love Is Holy as being my Kimlinda Carwilde, it was so blatant.

But you can't keep a good Rick Nowels song down, although Melanie C tried her best.

I've always found her voice to be one of the things I like about her- I find it really soulful. It's surprisingly good live as well, especially nowadays...

Though yes, technically it's VERY ordinary

She's a better singer than both Madonna and Kylie, but she doesn't have an unmistakeable voice like either of them... I think that's what I'm getting at about her voice... she's not recognisable in the same way as the other big female popstars of the time, vocally.

All of that said, You Came is one of the greatest pop masterpieces of all time.
 
Nobody ever talks about the utter 5-year-too-late LUDICROUSNESS of Who Do You Think You Are, but I love it. :D

I remember reading an article with a US well respected paper/magazine (Maybe Rolling Stone) going on about how Sam Fox was unusual in that she was a glamour model who could actually sing. I was AGOG :D
