Kylie Netflix Documentary (1 Viewer)

Kylie post-00 has never been anywhere near as ridiculed or critiqued as countless other popstars. most negative/invasive headlines have been about her inability to have kids or hold down a relationship. I don't think she's copped much heat professionally.
 
perhaps that's because the nation's darling (available in all high street perfumeries now) NEVER FLOPS!!!
 
Madonna very definitely had criticism about her vocals at the start of her career. She was famously described as 'Minnie Mouse on helium' for the first few years.

I'd say it was probably not until Live To Tell that people started to show any appreciation of her voice.

Then of course they criticised the 'courting controversy', and then it moved to ageism. And it's arguably continued as one or more of the above ever since. It's almost as if women in the industry cannot win.

This has largely all been from the mainstream press whereas Kylie has faced resistance from other artists within the industry and for instance a very public mauling in which criticism of her music basically fronted a nationwide campaign for a radio station. I suppose Abba had it a lot worse in the late 70s and early 80s though.
 
I also acknowledge that most of it stemmed from her beginnings as a soap star turned singer and being the public face of "manufactured" pop.

To be honest I think this argument that Kylie is the single most victimised woman in pop music is really quite ridiculous. She had some really cruel knocks, and she handled it with remarkable grace and aplomb. But she's part of a much wider pattern of female pop stars having their talents and creative input diminished by the press. Her story is far from unique in that regard.

Yeah I don’t think the press treatment Kylie received is of the same magnitude or harshness Britney ever got. The 2000s were also a very different time with what was considered acceptable with the likes of TMZ, Perez Hilton, 24/7 celebrity news/paparazzi etc. Madonna is a bit fairer of a comparison but again different time and Madonna had a decade of life experience (and a less parasitic circle/family around her) to handle it that Britney didn’t have at that time.
 
Binged this again last night and really think it's a masterwork and a complete success in the humanising of Kylie.. Found myself getting more emotional than the first time I watched it. :( Also the score is really affecting too and Harte has chosen the best Kylie songs to soundtrack it (Say Something gave me chills). People may complain that she remains an enigma but what stands out to me is how resiliant she is.
 
I sort of feel like if you'll watch 3 of these then you'll watch 4 - and they probably had a lot of stuff they didn't use, so, why not just... e x p l o r e more.
 
I’d say as the casual audience is the target here that 3 episodes would be more appealing and appear manageable. 4 or more might elicit an “I can’t be arsed with that response”. They should have deluxe edition documentaries with an extra bonus episode for the diehards after the initial block has aired.
 
That scene where she's looking at the negatives of her and Michael and then the photo reel flashes up on screen...together with the music they use...is chef's kiss. :disco: It really drives home just how much she was in love with him and why she holds that relationship up as a benchmark.

Yeah I feel like when I've been selling it to friends 3 has felt very much like the edge of what I can actually push.
 
Just remembered episode 2 starting with that WDIHTD intro is epic. :disco: The predictable choice would have been to use BTDYK.

Also using the album version of Shocked later in that episode! Love!

When she was due to headline in 2005, no commercial pop acts had headlined.

And I remember plenty of people criticising her being given the legends slot before she performed in 2019 (largely saying she was too young for it) so I don't think her apprehension was far fetched at all. Those acts you mentioned were significantly older!
 
Mis-Teeq did it. Kylie already did T In The Park, it was hardly some uncharted territory. Daphne & Celeste (V?) when they got bottled may have been a concern..
 
I find it a bit weird that people are rewriting the narrative that Kylie headlining Glastonbury in 2005 was not a big deal. It absolutely was!
 
It definitely was. Let's not forget how closed minded Glastonbury was for quite some time - I'd say the 'controversy' over Jay-Z headlining it in 2008 (?) which ended in critical acclaim was probably the moment only after which things got a bit less uptight around headliners.
 
In terms of the criticism that Kylie received in the late 80s and 90s, I still beg to differ. Things were considerably different around the height of dotmusic forum activity in the early Noughties however

I absolutely got the shit ripped out of me for liking Kylie when I was a kid so perhaps I'm more sensitive to how things were or at least the way I perceived them to be.
 
Just checked and noted GARAGE ACT Mis-Teeq played the DANCE TENT at Glastonbury in 2002. Not quite the same, is it?
 
I thought the nation’s number one rose wine and prosecco brand would have merited a mention too.
 
Finally got a chance to watch episode 3, and seeing the story of her cancer diagnosis in 2005, in fairly detailed form, made the revelation at the end all the more devastating. I still can’t quite get my head around the fact that she had to go through that again, but I’m pleased for her that she got to do it on her own terms, while amazed that she managed to keep it under wraps.

I did however find it quite surprising that she appeared to have forgotten about the existence of No More Rain!

That was the bit I didn't quite buy. If anything she seems very self conscious about her song writing which is a shame.
 
Although maybe I'm being a bit cynical and she has actually forgotten a lot of her own work.
 
This is what we find with superstars, narratives dug like trenches through all the STUFF to try and make some kind of sense, that there was intent/ or ambition or just anything that isn't random chaos and dumb luck.
