Kylie - Padam Padam (1st single, May 18th)

Mark my words, this is going to be a proper global hit and probably her 2nd/3rd biggest hit of all time because of its cross-generational appeal. It's going to take off in America, where I think it will peak at around number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as reaching the top 10 in many other territories including the UK and Italy.

Now that it's on all the playlists, we should hopefully see a decent jump on today's update. After that it's really a case of whether it has enough momentum to really crack into the upper echelons of Spotify, or whether it stalls and bounces around the lower end of the top 40 for ages like Zara Larsson and P!nk's recent hits (although Trustfall did get as high as #14 without ever going further than #39 on Spotify).

Obviously anything beyond this is a lovely bonus, but it's hard not to hope for more.

I haven't been keeping up, is there a specific reason this seems to have taken off for her more than usual? American Idol and TikTok?

Other than the fact it seems to be a mass appeal banger rather than tailored made for the gays that is

Obviously late to the party but it really is glorious and so perfect for her. She also looks unbelievable in the video. I don't think you could be a better popstar at this stage of your career.

Friday and Saturdays can be a little skewed with new releases and higher streams overall which often come at the expense of a more ‘fan base act’ - so I’m hopefully it at least just holds on Spotify and maybe slides up into the top 100.

From later in the weekend we should really see some movement from the playlisting, potentially up towards the top 50? It’s up to #21 on Apple which is fabulous.

I do wonder if it could take off in the US. It does seem a lot bigger than just a local #26 hit.

And when was the last time we were this excited about charts!?!

I think the sky's more or less the limit in the UK (as in, top 10 is not out of the question at all and is looking quite likely rn) but I don't see her snatching a US hit. it's incredibly hard there with radio to contend with, and she doesn't have the profile to get on a lot of playlists either. charting anywhere on the Hot 100 would be major.

It's now the 5th song on Apple Music Today's Hits.

I've also spotted it on the new Songs Of The Summer playlist - "Pop, dance and R&B HITS to soundtrack the perfect summer". It's a SMASH.

She hasn’t even had a song on the US Mainstream radio charts since Slow, so that would be quite something. Depends if her label gives it a real push there.

As a fairly casual Kylie fan, the combo of this and that video is easily the most instant thing she's done in YEARS. It's not even anywhere near her best lead single, she's just somehow nailed a total all encompassing bop with a memorable phrase, all presented like a star at the top of her game in her 20s. And with such EASE.

Even a low top 20 placing would be amazing. And if nothing else to prove it can be done in this chart climate

I must say, Kylie is unusually quiet about all the shenanigans on social media. She's playing it very cool.

Does anyone know if it's possible to move up playlists? For example, is there a chance she could move up the Hot Hits UK playlist in light of the growing success? The closer she is to the top, the more chance there is of this becoming a total behemoth.

I'm sure she's been whoooooOOOOOOOOOOoooOOOOoooop-ing non-stop behind closed doors
Gracious though she is about recording songs submitted to her, I reckon, there's a tiny part of her that probably wishes she had a hand in writing this, particularly after the input on the last two albums.

yes they're rearranged every few days. you usually enter lower and move up.

another day, another baseless crackpot theory :eyes:

Shut the front door, #69 is phenomenal given it was for Friday as well :o

This is going top twenty this week isn’t it? :disco:

Quickly rising up the Shazam chart too which is another marker of gaining traction.

Have the other commercial radio networks picked it up yet?

Guys this is already a hit. It is being mentioned EVERYWHERE. Even if it doesn’t go Top 10 (which it only will if it crosses over to the kids) it has already crossed over everywhere else and it’s not going away quickly and it will end up an important part of her discography.

The great thing is the story of this being a viral hit out of nowhere is bigger than the song itself at the moment. Now if if the song was SHIT, that would only last a news cycle. But because the song is so catchy and clearly striking a chord, the attention will impact the success of the song. I don’t see how this isn’t a hit for her.

Quite right babes. But I don’t think anyone is saying it isn’t a hit? More of a ‘how high can it go’ type thing now.

It's so obviously designed to go viral.

I do enjoy it, but I will die on the hill that this made with intent and cynicism.

Which isn't a problem necessarily, but it does take the sheen off it's star somewhat.

I agree but it’s fucking great.

CGYOOMH was designed to be catchy as fuck and play well on radio but no one denies it’s an amazing pop single.

If it was two minutes of Kylie saying “PADAM” sped up, I could take your point, but it’s a great song behind everything else and shouldn’t matter that it’s designed to perform well on the outlet of the day.

Aren't most songs these days? Correct me if I'm wrong. Tik Tok is a massive factor in determining the length of singles.

And though I initially acknowledged the influence exerted on this track by that platform is hasn't even taken off there yet.

This could well be true, but just because it was designed to go viral doesn’t mean it’s destined to be. It doesn’t diminish the fact that this has managed to strike a chord.

See I was thinking almost the exact opposite - although the PADAM bit is very "TikTok "friendly" (something that doesn't always work anyway as witnessed by numerous failed attempts, and I'm assuming that's the part of the song we're talking about here), underneath it's just a very straightforward and catchy pop song that could have been released at any time. It's also still VERY KYLIE so doesn't pander to being any of those modern trends too obviously, I would say it's more of an added bonus and feels natural. In many ways, a catchy song like this probably SHOULD have TikTok potential in its hook/chorus. She's just managed to do that effortlessly, entirely Kylie-ified and with a good song

Whether it was designed with intent or not, the fact it has connected is still a shock as it doesn’t normally happen, ever. When was the last genuine hit for a woman over 50? Solo in her own right? I’m going to assume Hard Candy era or so?

That’s also a good point- it’s still ENTIRELY Kylie and on brand. It’s not like she’s PADAMing to the lowest common denominator here.
