In a statement Radio 1 told Newsbeat it considers tracks for its playlist "based on its musical merit and whether it is right for our target audience".
It said it makes decisions on "a case-by-case basis".
Al agrees that it's all about pleasing your target audience.
"Some stations aim younger and it may be the view that Kylie isn't the right artist for that," he says.
"Unfortunately, you're always going to make somebody unhappy with the decisions you make.
"There's only so many hours in a day to play songs."

It just reflects bad on them - she’s smashing streaming, Capital are promoting her more than Radio 2 even, Kiss have it in rotation - all their direct competition are heralding it. And it’s now a top ten hit - so they’re on the wrong side. Digging their heals in just shows they aren’t willing to do what their actual job is - play the hits younger people are consuming.

Yep, the other three had ok peaks, but none made any year end top 100s really at all, whereas ATL did actually very well from what I see.

There can't be many artists with a 35 year run of UK top 10 hits. As far as females go Kate Bush and Cher probably have longer... Madonna less now I imagine.
