Kylie - Say Something

I know this is stating the obvious but they really need to fix the charts. Maybe it’s time to add in airplay. I never thought I’d say that.

I've not looked at the airplay chart in years to decide if I think that's a good idea or not. But my kneejerk reaction is not.

I believe the singles charts should be what people are choosing to stream and buy, and what people are choosing to stream and buy is not Kylie Minogue, so why rig it just for artists with a specific/niche appeal? Obviously the current system has many flaws too, not least the dreaded ACR and its random/arbitrary application, but it IS more or less a reflection of the songs people play, so...

I don't think incorporating airplay (or perhaps changing the format of the charts) is rigging it necessarily, but I can see Jark's point. Surely some type of reform wouldn't go amiss though. Maybe switching to monthly rather than weekly charts? I know this doesn't necessarily help Kylie Minogue (or other Moopy faves) but surely the current set-up is not really fit for purpose?

It’s simple consumer behaviour really. Probably covered on here before. But back in the day when singles sales made sense, 1 buy = 1 sale. Doesn’t matter how many times you listened to the record, that’s it, you don’t get any more points on the chart stats. But because now charts are mostly based on listens not purchases, it skews way higher for young people’s music. Young people tend to have a smaller music base and are more likely to repeat songs they like, so they stream count goes up. Hence grime, commercial dance, commercial R&B and the big stars like Swift and Sheeran doing well. Kylie fans are more likely to be mixing their listening with other music. 90s stuff. 80s stuff. More passive. More likely to listen to radio as well. Etc.

so the charts are definitely an accurate reflection of music use. It just means the singles chart can never be as diverse as it once was. No indie, rock, adult pop, country, etc

it’s a shame. But hey ho.

I kind of feel like they should have just introduced streaming as a separate chart? It's the most popular way of consuming music these days, and so would make sense as a new main chart, but there is a big difference between purchasing a record on vinyl for example, and streaming a song.

And that's not to say one is better than the other, but they are very different ways of consuming music, providing different sorts of data, in a way that buying a CD and buying an album off iTunes weren't necessarily.

There is a streaming chart as compiled by the OCC but these days it’s almost identical to the main chart because of how dominating it now is over sales.

I’d love them to introduce an alternative chart. The indie chart is now useless. It’s supposed to track independent label music but these days being on an indie label means nothing - Adele is on an indie label. The indie chart is made up of songs by her and a load of grime artists, many of which are years old. What’s the point of a chart if it’s not illustrating new music?

they also need to overhaul the dance and R&B charts. It must be based on streaming and not sure how you can monitor the core audience - it used to be that those Charts were based on specialist retailers. So the charts were very fast moving and featured a lot of underground talent. Again, these days it’s the same songs with very little movement for months on end. What’s the point?

Sales are just so low they are increasingly irrelevant. The #1 single last week was actually bought by 0.01% of the population. Given that's clearly not how the vast majority of the population choose to consume (eww) music now, I find it hard to argue that pure sales should be given more weight, and consequently the overall official chart looks a lot more like the streaming chart than the sales one.

The fact that the OCC haven't tinkered with the sales/streaming ratio to favour pure sales for a while makes me think they know they are on to a losing battle though. I fully expect that we'll eventually get to the point where sales cease to be included at all.

I noted Kylie had 500 sales last Thursday. That's what we get excited about.

Sorry I'm having a thick moment. Do you mean her streaming numbers are equivalent to 500 sales or is there a physical release of the single?

It must be the streaming equivalent.

The really ridiculous aspect in all this is that the target demographic (I.e the young) probably don't even give a fuck about the charts.

They are redundant for singles (and increasingly for albums too).

I imagine the young just play Spotify playlists really (which is why it's increasingly more important for artists to have a prominent position in a Spotify playlist).

I am not sure about that yet. Particularly with the resurgence of vinyl (yes I know it's a niche market) and also for the short term at least Covid19 means that there may be more focus on physical products in the absence of being able to play gigs...

That was #2. The number 1 was about 750. We could have got her to no.1.

She's no. 15 on my iTunes at the moment (unless that's not the most updated version *hits refresh frantically*). Holding up pretty okay I would have thought.

(Then again if No. 2 means 500 then I imagine no. 15 is around 100 downloads..)

On a side note Rina Sawayama, Jessie Ware and SG Lewis have responded to her Spotify playlist with the latter even suggesting a collaboration.

I don't know who SG Lewis is but Rina Sawayama has spoken on multiple interviews about Kylie. It would be great if she would collaborate with her :disco:

I haven't purchased it yet. I had assumed I'd contribute to her streaming numbers for all the good it has done.

it just feels like an antiquated thing to do. I'm trying to keep up with the kids.

When I say buying, I mean download, of course. Had there been a physical, I'd have been swept up and bought it for sure.

Someone tell me when she might have maximum impact and I'll buy it (and preorder the album) then.

On that note, this might be a ridiculous question but don't album pre-orders in any way contribute towards the sales of Say Something?

Oh as if you haven't already pre-ordered every single bundle from her website and also Amazon, HMV and FNAC. :bad:

:D

I only have Golden on CD (the version with the book) and that was out of a sense of loyalty than actually wanting to own the physical. I don't buy ANY physical albums any more. I pay for Spotify.
