unrelated to Tension but I'm in a big mood for Kylie's whole discog for the first time in ages so I made this playlist with essential singles, a few album tracks and some live slays - 4 hours of hard 10s :disco:

Pop ‘Turn It Into Love’ on there are we have a playlist :disco:

I mean that is great. Should get another 1.5k-2k with the final two days streaming and some additional sales, which should be a lock on top 20.

I thought the cds weren't shipping until today so they wouldn't be included in today's figure? anyway, looks like she might hang onto top 20 :disco:

Its not just Kylie, but is anyone actually listening to these new cassettes? I get vinyl, but whats the point of the cassettes (besides collecting and chart manipulation)

CDs too really. I will never end up actually playing those Tension CDs I just purchased.

Let's not pretend vinyl is THAT much different. There was an article last year that said 50% of people who buy vinyl have no means of playing it. Then there are people like me who buy it, have the means to play it, but don't. And then all the multiple format vinyls - because I'm sure if you buy multiple formats with the same tracklisting, most people who play it only play one version. I'd be surprised if 25% of new vinyl bought is actually played.

But cassettes are another league entirely. Who even has the equipment to play them? We do, on a very old music system I bought with my first salary and I can't bring myself to throw out, despite it not having been used for two decades.

Inspired by finding a box of old cassettes a couple of years back I immediately purchased a Walkman in Argos…yet to be used.

In a world where the likes of Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi are auto-added to multiple of the most popular streaming playlists, and benefit hugely from the most passive of listener engagement, I think we can forgive other artists for using physical platforms as both a hustle and a counterbalance.

Basically, who cares, carry on.

I'm pretty sure both Sheeran AND Capaldi have pulled the 99p CD single trick out of the bag on MORE than one occasion! They have it way too easy!

Didn't the 99p singles basically push the singles from Capaldi's last album to #1?

I quite agree. And I'm not sure I agree with the limit on physical formats any more either. I understand when the rule was introduced, but now I don't see it serves any purpose at all.

The chart is basically a game. I'm glad she's playing it.

He's done it more than once hasn't he?

And Olivia Rodrigo did it last week - although the difference there is that she was always very much in contention for #1 anyway, whereas he never was without it. Was the Dua Lipa cd single released the week she went to #1 as well?

Yep Dua went number 1 the week of the cd, and Billie Eillish did with the cassette release. Ive no problem with these stunt queen's getting to number 1 this way when the alternative is dirge like Dave, Sheeran and Capaldi. Especially as the ladies songs were all proper genuine long running hits too, that will surely finish top 30 on the year end chart.

It is pretty terrible for the environment for the music industry to be churning out all this functionally useless plastic tat tbh.

They should just make cassette shaped soap bars instead. If you're anything like Kylie with her ABBA 'cassette', you won't be able to tell the difference anyway.

i never wanna set eyeballs on that pic again :D kill it with fire

I agree, not a great shot. Have this instead:
