Kylie - Tension II (Album XVIb)

Padam Padam already hinted it could be, but with the response to this album and the scale of the tour, this is surely officially her THIRD imperial era :disco:
 
Night Owl is magnificent



as in better than the whole album? shades of trance. gagged. the final minute! :disco: I need this on streaming this week.
 
I wouldn't go that far! She sounds beautiful on it but I could do without the owl impressions.
 
apparently it's something that recorded for the next album that might not make it now with this leak :( that would be a major shame
 
I really like the album and I'd say I like it more than it's sister album, although the highs aren't as high. It's just very consistent* in style and this is a sound that really suits her.

* Until you get to the collection of collabs tacked rather gracelessly on the end, but I do love three of those four songs so it's no great crime.
 
Kylie really needs to retain some of these collaborators for the next album. They breathe new life into her work.

I love Biff and realistically they will never not work together but it's a refreshing change that she has these new people on board (not sure about Steve Mac though, Taboo is Great, My Oh My...not so much). I'm just grateful we don't have more Ph.D/Cutfather on this.
 
I'm curious to know who produced Night Owl. Some people are saying it's Biff but I don't see it.
 
Gave this a few listens and found it all pretty forgettable and rather tacky.

I also don’t buy that this is the kind of music she wants to make.

Where is the sophistication?

Has anyone else purchased the digital extended version?

I much prefer the songs lasting longer and feeling like complete tracks.
 
I need some feedback from people before I bite the bullet. If they are anything like the Extension mixes, I'll pass

Wondering if I should get it, and have my first listen be of the extended mixes?
 
In my opinion, aside from Shoulda Left Ya (which seems unnecessarily trunkated to fit with the remit of the rest of the album) none of the songs on the original record sound incomplete.
 
Quite happy with this as an extras collection. A couple of the songs feel a bit b-sidey and the track lengths maybe feed into that. The run of Taboo, Someone For Me and Good As Gone is the peak. Hello does Padam better than Kiss Bang Bang, which isn't bad but it maybe should have been one or the other.

I'll probably bite for the extended versions but will hold for now to see if they release anything else.
 
I love Kiss Bang Bang. It's not as blatant and is very much its own thing. She sounds like a siren on it.

I think the run from Taboo to Kiss Bang Bang is exceptional. All tracks maintain those darker undertones which I love. Unfortunately Diamonds disrupts the run before we're back to stalker Kylie on Hello. :disco:

I wish she had the confidence to make the entire album in that vein.
 
I know it's not exactly the done thing these days but I could see Kiss Bang Bang soundtracking a Tarantino film.
 
I realise that some people might find this a bit sacrilegious but for once Kylie's description of using Slow as the blueprint for a record actually makes a bit of sense.

Also Taboo is very much the song that Toxic would have been had it been recorded for Body Language. The opening couplet is very obviously a reference to it.
 
This is the first post SAW Kylie album I’ve not bought in week one. I’ve given it a few streams and will no doubt buy the reduced price CD in a few months for completist reasons.

I’m delighted for her that she continues to flourish wonderfully but for me the songs just aren’t there this time and yeah, it feels a little basic to my ears. However, with 17 albums not every one will hit the spot so that’s grand, I’ll still be here for the next one.

I was considering the extended mixes version from the artist store but I’ve been burnt before by not being able to access the files in my phone (it’s probably a me issue).
 
I've just been disappointed with Guy Massey's mixes in the past. They never seem sympathetic to the source material.

I don't think songs should be extended just for the sake of it.
 
His extended mix of Miss A Thing was abominable. Completely destroyed the flow of the song which was what made the original song great.
 
After a few listens through Kiss Bang Bang is sticking out, would love that to be a single :disco:
 
should have about 33-36k by Friday then which is not bad at all given the quick follow up to Tension and no hit/buzzy single.
 
Still obsessed with Hello y'all. it's the most deliciously dark thing she has done...possibly ever. Can't help myself - I keep going back to it. If we don't get a video with serial killer/stalker Kylie I'll be disappointed.

love this from the Paper interview about making more experimental/less formulaic (in her own words) music again:
You’re talking about the ‘90s, and I’ve been listening to the album Kylie Minogue quite a bit, from 1994 I believe. And also Impossible Princess, which among my peers, has had a sort of critical re-evaluation and new audience. Do you see any similarities between that time in your career and now, with the things you're trying or the music you want to make?

Maybe in that I don’t feel like I’m being funneled into one direction, or doing that to myself. I feel pretty open to all sorts of things, but I heard some of Impossible Princess the other day, and I would like to do something like that again. I don’t know what that means, because you can’t have that time again, but definitely, we’ve got the code right for the songs that are working now. “Padam Padam,” “Lights Camera, Action.” I want to share them with people, but there’s a bit of me that’s thinking I would like to think outside the box a bit. Have a swim in less formulaic waters, just to do it. That’s a mindset and a space. I’d like to have some of that feeling of that time back, just to get it out of my system. There might be something great. There was just so much creativity, and really, a lot of lyrics from my core that were poetic or esoteric. I said what I wanted to say, which isn’t a smash pop song, but perhaps there’s a world for it now.

Dang it. She's probably too far in front for them to do a cheap digital.

I'll just need to wait until the CD is a fiver in HMV's post-Christmas sale.
