Our Labour candidate has been announced - Pam Cox. She was one of my lecturers at Uni and has done a couple of TV shows. She's currently the favourite to win here and become only the second Labour MP here ever. Please make it happen.

For too long, we have allowed foreigns in with useless skills like midwifery and nursing. What this country is crying out for is TECH BARONS.
 
The real issue is a lack of sufficient workforce planning in all areas of the UK. We're not training enough people to fill vacant NHS posts - hence there are not enough medical, dental and nursing trainees etc to replace those who are leaving. We knew 10-15 years ago based on NHS workforce demographics that this would happen.

Most of which can be attributed to policy decisions by various UK and devolved governments - cutting student nursing places, reducing training bursaries and enforcing real-terms pay cuts year on year.

Brexit did the NHS staffing crisis no favours, most of the nurses over here from Europe felt they had no choice but to return to their home country. Plus I'm sure most Tories have their fingers in the nursing agency pies making them seem more appealing than working for the NHS therefore justifying privatising it when it collapses due to draining trusts by making it so they are paying extortionate rates to staff wards by paying agency staff.
 
he's fucking braindead and I remain unconvinced that Labour will win the next election, or even that them doing so under Starmer would be a positive thing. this is Tory rhetoric through and through, even Boris wasn't coming out with that shit.

if we want freedom of movement for ourselves around the world, we also have to offer it to others. it's really not that DIFFICULT.
 
The problem with the NHS is the pay is shit. I was looking at data analytical jobs and the salaries offered were way below my current salary. I know nurses who have quit the NHS to go work for private hospitals and they earn much more and the shifts are much better.

The NHS is unsustainable in its current format anyway. In the past year, I’ve accessed private medical care through my insurance through work more times than I have in any other year because there’s just too big a waiting time. Six months wait for physio when I contacted the NHS. One phone call later and I was seeing a private physiotherapist two hours later.
 
The NHS pay wasn't *that* shit when I qualified in 2012, but students in England weren't lumbered with paying back £35,000 of debt because the course was subsidised. Now, students have to pay for what is essentially 50% an apprenticeship (they're supernumerary, but not in an observer capacity) and then pay the debt back when they qualify.

It's not just chronic short-staffing, though. The pay for nurses doesn't reflect the increased skills undertaken from the point of qualification, which came into force three years ago. That is more on the nursing regulator than the government because they pushed it through knowing they were increasing the onus on the lowest-earning nurses with no capacity to uplift wages alongside in recognition of it.

However, for me it underlines something that I think is probably true of most - if not all - public sector workers and it's that there's a fundamental misunderstanding of what these roles actually look like in 2022. I feel like people cling into fanciful notions of what it means to be a nurse, a teacher etc. but because the roles are responsive and evolve in real-time, they rarely get redefined and thus those raising legitimate concerns are often perceived as an anomaly.

Was this in England or Scotland out of interest?

Pay in NHS Scotland is higher than rUK although you are right that it doesn't compare to what you could be paid in the private sector. There is a trade off however. There is far greater job security (no compulsory redundancies etc) in NHS Scotland at the expense of lower pay.

The slow claim processing is actually half the problem. 3 year waits on asylum applications dont exactly encourage people taking legitimate routes, not that i agree with any of the other hardline shit

The processing delay is an issue, but has no effect on the legitimate vs illegitimate route business. The reality is, there AREN’T any legitimate routes for people to come here as refugees, and on the rare occasions people are able come over under any other immigration route, they’re immediately criminalised as liars and frauds.
 
As I said elsewhere, the dial has been pushed so much into having to fight against completely inhumane practices like DEPORTING PEOPLE TO RWANDA or WATCHING BOATS SINK IN THE OCEAN FROM THE SHORE like in Italy that the bullshit that Yvette is coming up with is seeing as progressive and acceptable.

The sheer madness of not being able to claim asylum until in the UK feels so very calculated to cause this hateful suspicion of people who find the most desperate of ways to get here.

I fixed that for you. If you're blond with blue eyes they will plaster airport lounges with the flag of your country and create a whole asylum scheme* so they can beat their chests about it loudly.

*Note: the scheme may be so shit asylum seekers may end up in the streets anyway and no one will give a toss.
